Good tip on the auto add. Fortunately for my needs right now we are only dealing with Arri Alexa footage and Avid seems to understand the auto application very well with it's media. In my limited experience the Sony F55 behaves nicely too.
So I did some testing with my 8.4 startup drive and I can confirm that it is what's in the process box that actually modifies the levels. with the auto mode on if you ama link to a clip an automatic LUT will be applied based on Avid's interpretation of the media. Arris and Sony F55 are correctly ID'd in my experience. If however you have a bin already populated with ama clips those do not receive the auto LUT. It seem only when linking does the auto LUT apply.
I compared the on set LUT which was completely illegal, which is what I have come to expect, the Avid Arri LogC to Rec 709 LUT, The Resolve exported Arri LogC to Rec 709 #D soft LUT and media that I used Resolve to apply their internal Arri LogC to Rec 709 LUT to process DNX media in Resolve. I found the Avid LUT looked close to the imported Resolve Exported soft LUT but the Resolve import was a bit more aggressive with the blacks closer to 0 millivolts and a bit brighter aroun 10 to 15 millivolts in the peaks. The media processed through Resolve, which up to now has been my typical approach, was substantially more conservative than the two others with black levels 20 to 30 millivolts higher and peak 50 millivolts or so lower.
All are very usable but I was kind of surprised how different the Resolve made media was from using the Resolve LUT in Avid on the raw clips. Seems there is no uniformity to how these are handled. Perhaps the fact that when I exported the Resolve LUT it became a "soft" LUT plays into the difference but I still would have expected to see a closer match more like what I see internally in Avid comparing the Resolve imported to the Avid internal LUT which are very close to each other.
So once again I find this whole LUT thing inconsistent with the on set DIT/colorist, who seems very competent, delivering me LUTs that are completely illegal and basically usless to me. Perhaps they would track better if I was working in Resolve but it always seems like the LUTs I get from the field are more suited for an RGB color space. They usually look like a bad graphic import of RGB material not scaled to 16-235. AT least the field isn't sending me Fonts too. Because I really hate Fonts even more than LUTs.
