From a suggestion in the thread I found in the Avid Forums I was able to force the title tools to open in Marquee and there the font works. WTF??? I've seen in the past where a Font might not appear in the Title tool but will appear as a choice in Marquee. I've always equated it with some confusion of Font Family Name and Menu Name being the same, which I see sometimes in the properties section of Transtype Pro. But this is a first for me where the font appears but doesn't read right in Title Tool but does work in Marquee.
Time for another Rant on how much I loath everything about Fonts which, in case you didn't know, were created solely to F with John Moore. They seem to serve that purpose well at the expense of my dwindling sanity.

For some reason an Title from offline in the American Typewriter Font is coming up all Rectangle. The font works correctly in word and it looks fine in font book. It works on other systems around the plant. We are mac. It even works as a font on my mbp laptop but when I uninstall American Typewriter and use the version from my laptop still same thing. I've tried on two of our Mac OS 10.8.5 systems with Avid 8.x and 6.5.4 along with my system of Avid 6.5.4.7 but they all come up rectangles. On our other systems that are Avid 6.5.4.X on Mac OS 10.7.5 the font works. As I said it also works on my mbp that has Mac OS 10.6.8.
I also tried using my mac version of transtype Pro to convert the font. Sometimes that helps but usually that's when the font isn't available in the title tool menu. Now when I try it the resulting font shows up as strange symbol that looks like a dot under Bull Horns. I'm guessing this is perhaps OS related as that seems to be the common thread. Would it make sense that a font version of American Typewriter would somehow be problematic to only Avid on Mac OS 10.8.5 and above?
