When I got my 17" MacBook Pro, the very last model they sold before removing that size from the lineup, it shipped with 10.7, and I could not install 10.6 on it. I wanted 10.6 because it's the best os for fcp 7, and my MacBook would have been able to run it if it had been released before - same story as Bouke. It didn't take long to realise that I could just clone a 10.6.8 onto my internal hard drive. This laptop is still in use, with 3 partitions. 10.6 for legacy fcp projects, 10.8 for the Avid and ElCap for Adobe.
Your own mileage might vary, but you could install 10.10 on a USB drive and take that to an apple store and try to boot it on the laptop you want to buy.
