Re: [Avid-L2] SD raster size in Media Composer 8.4.1

If you check in the editor PDFs (MC and NewsCutter), this raster size (well, frame size)  is mentioned as far back as 2005, specifically for SD J2K resolutions (in the 8.4 PDF PAL is referred to as 720x592 wheas NTSC is 720x486 (inconsistent?). Under Monitor Display Resolutions we see Active Video as 720x576 (PAL) with 'Stored video not displayed: 16 lines of blanking or VITC per frame (8 per field'). Maybe that's where the discrepancy comes from. I suspect it works as it always has but we have something extra to worry about.

I tried importing a test card and a graphic with a circle . . . and made a circle in Title Tool in 8.4. The imported files looked slightly too tall but I've seen this before and it looked very similar in v7 where the raster sizes are described as I'd expect. I suspect nothing has changed but the numbers (confusing).

There is no logic here. This is why it needs to be fixed.

I'm not following your logic here.  If it stretched it vertically then it's taking the 486 high and displaying it 496 high right.  Sized for stretches H and V to fit the raster size.  To me that means Avid is really thinking SD is 496 high and displaying that many lines thereby stretching it to fit the raster.  Is the image showing on the computer monitor the only thing vertically stretched?  Is the SD SDI output correct.  That would point to just the computer display being off and not the actual signal out of the I/o box.

Roger,

You are right. These numbers are wrong. Thanks for finding it.

I imported a 4x3 - 720x486 test paterns JPEG of my own in the SD NTSC 720x496 project on 8.4 with the image sized for current format setting and it was vertically streched.
I then exported it back as a QT and it was a perfect 720x486. Therefore MC shows 496 but it thinks 486.

This needs to be fixed.

OK - I am obviously giving away my film, rather than video background here. These extra lines are part of the (old?) VBI or VTI and can be used for VITC and CC text. But does anyone know why Avid has suddenly changed the numbers in the New Project dialogue? Arrived in 8.4, I believe.

I had occasion to create an SD project today in MC 8.4.1. I always considered PAL to be 720x576 (non-square) and NTSC to be 720x486 (or 480 for DV). Creating a new project in 8.4.1 offers a PAL raster size of 720x592 and 720x496 for NTSC. Once the projects are opened the sytem reports the expected raster size in the project window. Have I missed some new technical standard? With Best Wishes, Roger Shufflebottom +44 7973 543 660
