[Avid-L2] Re: evolution of resolve

"I may be alone in this perception, but I am currently viewing Resolve's evolution as a professional variation of FCPX. Would I use Resolve to cut a big and complicated job -- absolutely not. However, Resolve has become the default go-to platform for grading and they are growing the editorial feature-set at an impressive rate. "

I've just finished part 2 of a 3 part series on Resolve for TheBroadcastBridge. Part 2 focuses on using Resolve as an NLE. There are visual similarities between FCP X and Resolve, but they are radically different NLEs. Mostly Resolve is like FCP Classic.

There are two reasons I don't like editing in Resolve: its performance is terrible which BM hopefully will fix, and from the perspective of someone who uses FCPX, it is like going back to the dark ages. With FCPX one simply does what one wants to do -- while with other NLE's one first tells the NLE what one would like it to do and only then is the NLE ready for one to do it. So Resolve may well be attractive MC users you like/need this way of editing.

Because of Premiere's CC ability to rapidly edit almost everything it's unlikely one would switch to Resolve, especially with their new CC.

FCPX users will be tempted because although FCPX wins on speed, Apple has yet to provide FCPX with grading capabilities. Apple may think round-tripping will solve this problem, but -- so far -- it really does not. (Part 1 of my series.)

Given the huge following that FCP garnered and that Resolve is most like FCP, plus it works naturally with all the new cameras -- no AMA needed -- it's certainly possible that by version 12/13 Resolve will be ready to pull many independent, especially new, editors from Adobe, Apple, and Avid.

If you were starting-out this year, would you begin a subscription to a product, especially one that stops working if you stop paying (Adobe) or, like Avid's "free"  | First, may only let you publish your work on Marketplace? Moreover, DaVinci has, to a growing number of shooters/editors, a better name than MC -- something Avid just does not want to realize.

And, did I mention, it really is free?
