Re: [Avid-L2] OT: Editor's Retreat

Before.  According to my records, that historic trek you describe took place on Friday night, February 29th, 2008.

I can't remember if 2007 was before or after the first and only so far Editor's Oki Dog Retreat after an Editor's Lounge.  Wilson, Jimmy D., Rich F and myself attended.  I think your confidence in the 2nd Editor's Retreat had a lot to do with your Oki Retreat.  ;-)  I'm sure the OKI experience made a lasting impression on you too.  Sadly Greg H. did not attend that historic get together perhaps some day he too will join the ranks of the chosen ones.  ;-)

I second Liam's comments.

I went in 2001 when it was run by Avid (as the Master Editor Workshop).  Fantastic experience - the proverbial "drinking from a fire hose".  At that point I had about 5 years of video editing experience (plus 10 years in sound post and recording).  With the high quality of people attending, I was wondering why they let me come.

I also attended in 2007, the first year the FMC had taken over and renamed it Editors Retreat.  Another great gig.  By that time I had the experience and chops such that I felt I belonged to the talented group attending.

Those two workshops were by far the best professional training/development that I have had.  Plus I made great contacts/friends too.  The panels and presenters were very good, but some of the best learning came during meals and hang out time with peers,

One of these years I need to do another one.

I went in 2012 Austin and 2013 Cancun.
I had a blast both times, and am trying to make 2015 work out for my schedule.
I consider the Editors Retreat one of the best networking investments in my career.
Other than the gift bag, which can actually cover a fair chunk of the cost, I go for the people.
Many who are already friends from NAB, and some I met through the event itself.
And if that is not enough, then there are full days of educational panels covering a huge number of topics.

If you have the time, I think it is definitely worth it.

Anyone ever been to an "Editor's Retreat"?

I've been doing broadcast doc editing for about 25 years and am always
interested in hearing about different approaches.

Thx.
