I do know Subbits and admire it from afar, but I've never had the distinct need. We've use InqScribe primarily for time-coded transcription of interviews. As it happens, InqScribe can also handle our limited captioning needs. We build open captions from existing scripts. We use InqScribe to breakdown and time the script and generate FCP XML or subtitle file. It's not perfect, but it works. We don't do closed-captions, DVD subtitles, or translations in house.
I don't love SubCap, but it's working for us at the moment. I agree about it's weaknesses. The font clipping is particularly annoying. To be honest, I don't expect to be using SubCaps much, but I still like Avid DS as caption output format. It's the best format for review and markup.
I believe InqScribe would be legitimately interested in whether other Avid editors use their product in this way. They export several formats that are very close. Right now we use the Spruce STL export and remove the commas and add the missing breaks. Easy enough with search and replace, but InqScribe could save us the trouble.
