In an effort to cut Avid some slack, I have resisted the temptation of sharing my opinion that after waiting a year and a half -- version 8.1 (for me) offers a small number of incremental improvements. I won't waste everyone's bandwidth by restating the excessively long list of bugs and long-requested features that it does not address. We all know them too well -- and we've all complained loudly about them.
It is hard to imagine that ACA is anything more than a stalling strategy that buys Avid another year or two before they have to deliver on feature requests that have been clearly, and repeatedly, articulated by their customer base for well over a decade.
I cannot imagine why you'd need the feedback from a paid consortium -- when the development path can be easily be divined by simply reading your own forums. But, I'm sure the ACA income stream was also a large part of why it was invented in the first place. Someone has to pay for the development effort that Avid cannot afford.
However, as an added bonus of this new world order, I am thrilled to find Avid's new Application Manager insisting on telling me that I have to "BUY" version 8.0.0.33165 -- which is patently impossible because if you have paid for the 8.0 subscription, you are automatically entitled to every release for the remainder of the year (if I am not mistaken).
The App tab of this wonderful new Manager is also completely unaware of the existence of 8.1 -- nor does it provide a facility for me to access it in any fashion other than the traditional download page. And the Avid "My Products and Subscriptions" page still does not accurately list the products I've purchased -- unless you count version 5 as being the last product I purchased.
In this crazy, mixed-up world we live in -- I find it both comforting and reassuring that Avid is still able to maintain such a high-level of dysfunction.
