I can't remember running into this particular quirk.  It is possible I am being misled and the root cause is not what it appears.  I've seen files that had to be in particular locations, especially the root level, or no more than one level deep, or even files that could NOT be at the root but had to be one level down, and there are always pathname length limits…

But in this case, the particulars of where do not seem to matter, as long as it's no more than five levels down.  

And this apparently changed from 7.0.2 to 7.0.3.
