[Avid-L2] Re: Avid's biggest challenges

I disagree is that what MC Lite buyers want are "updated innovative features." MS thought Word users needed features and more features. User's were not happy with the resulting bloatware.
Nor, do I think the low-cost buyers want MC V7 tossed at them.

Even at V6, before the new new Bin tabs were introduced in V6.5, MC could do all of what most video editors need to do. No one doing, for example, corporate work needs any of the film or tape functions. They need to import MPEG-2 (Sony/Panasonic) and H.264 based codecs, directly with no AMA. They don't need metadata, just the files. They need Bins and a way to log. They need to trim and create Sequences. Add FX, graphics, and titles. Then export H.264 and ProRes. V6, or V6.5, can do all of this. (Only the non-AMA import of H.264 is missing.) What features FCP X or Premiere Pro offer are not as relevant as folks here think.

FCP X has tons of innovative features, but is obtuse. CC with the Color Board? Ugh. Magnetic timelines? Compound Clips? Libraries? Editing doesn't need to be made more weird. (I use FCP X so I'm not one of FCP fanboys who hate FCP X.)

Premiere Pro is almost a direct copy of FCP, but with a horrible GUI with messy pallets that are always in the way.

What Avid offers are TWO Viewers each with a complete set of motion controls. And, when you create the correct Toolbars, most everything can be accomplished without going to the menus. And, Toolbars enables trackpad control that requires no memory of keystrokes. (Sorry) Remember, many/most of those who would buy MC Lite are part time editors. Recognition memory is far easier for folks than Recall memory.

All of the powerful functions you want -- could come in MC -- at a much higher price. (Although I have my doubts about ever getting node-based effects in MC.)

This is the only way I see for Avid to build a new larger user base and get increased revenue. Even if bought, the new owners will need to do something to accomplish these twin goals. Just pumping money in for more features for existing owners won't generate anymore profit than MC can generate now.
