" After removing functions to create "MC Lite" at $300 to $500 to grab new customers -- that would leave V7 at $1000."
You are forgetting about the days of MC Xpress and MC. It didn't work and was as a confusing CF of products, features and prices as one could find. And with FCPX growing in leaps and bounds, where does Avid cut off the "MC Lite" development so as not to compete with itself and still be able to attract the new user?
"That sounds crazy awful, but if this increase on the installed-base (sorry) stabilized Avid, I would think it might be accepted."
It's not our responsibility to provide extra funding for Avid's turnaround. Avid needs to figure out what it's brand stands for, speak to it's advocates and make a better product that generates excitement/new customers. In short, sell me "why" I should start with Avid, not a feature list. Right now Avid is missing all three.
"A stable Avid is critical to everybody"
Media Composer won't go away any time soon due to its large, entrenched user-base in Hollywood and broadcast. However, the devil you know is sometimes better than the devil you don't, so I would be hesitant to be railing for a sale. But, that might not be a choice. Perhaps Avid becomes the next Quantel: was once a player, really solid products but we don't see them much in the real world outside of broadcast. And a company buying Avid may look at it just that way. Get a grip on the Hollywood/Broadcast folks and not really worry about everyone else. Focus on that market and who cares about college kids unless they are majoring in those market areas.
"Perhaps, ACA is partly an effort to find-out what the biggest $$$ customers must have."
Certainly could be. Feels like an attempt to offset lost revenue from other areas too. How much do support contracts cost these days? Are they really still around? And how many people have them? If, say, 2500 editors are intrigued/crazy enough to plunk down $150, thats a quick $375,000 to the bottom line, And maybe 200 will go to NAB and eat cheap food and hob-nob with the suits, so not much expense there. Not much but every little bit helps fo a company that seems to be losing it's cash position.
