RE: Re: [Avid-L2] [OT] - job search conundrum

If you know them and they are reputable, do it.  But ask for {in writing) a deal memo or letter of intent that lays out that if they use your work you will get paid $xxxxx amount of dollars. If they balk at a written deal memo, walk away from it.  If they consider it, they are probably folks you would want to work for.

My .02 cents

Good luck with it.  Let us know how it turns out.

I have done two "tryouts" for potential jobs, and for each I asked them if I could come work for a couple of days. Both were sessions for which they were to be paid, so they paid me my freelance rate. Never got a blip of pushback, and I received offers from both companies.

Different situation from yours, obviously, but I think if they had simply asked me to come audition on a previously completed project, I probably would have done it for travel expenses (this was in linear days and several states away from my home) since I was out of work at the time. As long as it doesn't cost you anything significant, you might go ahead and do it.

Sounds like a tryout to me. If its something they already had cut, it seems they want to compare your output to theirs. Just to see if you match their style. I don't think you're giving anything away. Although it does seem like something that should only take a day, but that depends on how complex of a tryout it is.
