They're here...
I'm in the process of setting up my new 60 inch Panasonic Plasma Smart TV. I've got it hard wired to a gig Ethernet switch and it is communicating to the Net. I have the Direct TV Genie system Whole Home DVR setup. I'm noticing when I go to Netflix directly through the TV and watch something like Weeds the first time I hit the volume control the level box pops up larger then normal and has an add under the volume slider. I've seen a Canon EOS add and others I can't remember. Subsequent volume adjustment and the add is not there. I also see this behavior when watching the direct tv genie box playing back a recorded show and last night I was watching ABC ch. 7 LA live off the direct tv satelite and an ad pop up box came up in the middle of a show. It wasn't an in show window of opportunity promo it was a car ad IIRC.I get the Netflix volume thing and even the dvr'd programs with the volume thing but it seems a stretch to be popping up ads on a satellite channel watching ABC live or any cable network. Also the pop up box covered part of the lower right ABC bug which is partly why I think the smart tv was adding it or the satellite box is doing it. Does anybody know where this type of metadata add insertion is coming from? Does Panasonic have a server that communicates this data to my set or who is orchestrating this stuff. I had no idea they had so many hooks into a smart tv and or direct tv satellite box. Very interesting stuff.
