I've encountered this a lot recently. I get and generate all sorts of different QT flavors, from all different departments, not the least of which is DNxHD and Motion JPEG and all the rest. Nut now Mavericks has to do this whole "conversion" thing, which, by the way, takes forever. Super-sucky.

Apparently, when you open a non H.264 or ProRes movie in QT X, it automatically starts converting it. Fortunately QT 7 still works in Mavericks.
