Re: [Avid-L2] RE: 7D import to Avid @ 29.97 to eliminate ghosting

None of that (creating separate projects) is necessary, and is an antiquated workflow. The problem you're seeing has directly to do with how Avid is guessing at the Field Motion value of your clips, and guessing incorrectly. This is a known behavior and easy to fix.

To bring 23.98 clips from 7D into a 29.97i project:

1 - Link clips via AMA in 29.97i project
2 - show Field Motion column in bin and set all clips to Progressive
3 - Transcode

Without setting step 2, all your clips will likely be guessed as "Unknown" and the default motion adapter for 23.98 Unknown clips is that Avid thinks they are 23.98 Interlaced (?!) and applies a blended motion adapter. By setting Field Motion to "Progressive", you'll get the Avid default motion adapter for 23.98 Progressive clips in a 29.97i project, which is to add proper 2:3 pulldown. Then you won't get any blending or ghosting.

So in this case, Since the project is originally in 29.97, i have to create a 23.98, transcode and bring it over into the main 29.97 project?

but wouldn't that affect how the clips are played in the 29.97 project then? if it's transcoded as 23.98 to begin with?

Yes, you have to first transcode in a "native" project and then bring into the other project. IE if the footage is 29.97 and the project is 23.98, you have to create a 29.97 project, transcode there, and bring those clips into the 23.98 project.

hi everyone,
I'm currently dealing with this aggravating issue about how Avid transcodes 7D footage from 23.98 to 29.97.
The original footage does not have all this ghosting. I've tried using Sorenson (it completely ignores the 29.97fps setting) and handbrake and mpeg streamclip and everytime it goes into avid, avid generates all this ghosting. I don't know what I can do to eliminate this.

Has anyone run into this issue and/or know how to fix it?

Thanks!
