Again, your premise is not correct. FCP wasn't being used by
hobbyists. It was replacing MC. Widely. Frequently. In small post
houses and large. In broadcast and in film production. In my market,
only my company and one other remained on MC. Everyone else, and I mean
EVERYONE switched to FCP for financial reasons. I have stayed with MC
mainly because I know it better, and I'm faster on it, but Premiere is
getting more and more of my time now.

Most of those in my market who went to FCP7, and now trickling back to
Avid, or much more frequently going to Premiere because they end up
purchasing the Production Suite anyway, to get Photoshop and After
Effects - because Avid's graphics capabilities suck.

Avid is caught between a rock and a hard place. They can't ignore that
kind of competition and remain in business - but they may not be able to
take it on head-to-head and remain in business...... It's not a line
that I would want to walk.
