[Avid-L2] 48fps

Watched The Hobbit in 3D IMAX at 48fps tonight. For the first 10 minutes I figured my glasses were bad, the 3D was blurring like a bad FluidMotion effect as soon as anything really started to move. Took hem off, put them back on different ways, then noticed all the cuts were really fast R-to-L wipes, which made me figure the projectors were not in perfect sync, but offset by 1/48th of a second. Two minutes after I had sent a text message to the theatre about this, the show was stopped, and they restarted the entire show from the beginning and it was much better then. Made a hell of a difference, of course.

The 48fps seemed to work for me, except for close ups with little actual depth. Those felt like pure video. The lighter scenes seemed pretty heavily treated in post, whites seemed clipped at points, which distracted me and made things look artificial. Also I sometimes had the feeling I was watching an actor with a silly hat and suit in those lighter scenes. Just wasn't as convincing as in the darker scenes.

I felt that some actions - like running from A to B - actually felt slower because of the 48fps. And in some parts of the movie I got the impression that they countered this with extra motion blur on certain elements, breaking the crispness, and that felt much better to me - possibly because that's what we're used to. Slowmotion scenes were a whole different item. Took me a few seconds to realize they were meant to be slowmotion - just felt like slowly acted scenes at first. Maybe that takes some getting used to.

I'd love to see 48fps used in a more realistic setting; the whole fantasy world is artificial by nature, and it is hard to tell if 48fps adds to that. 48fps did seem to make the whole 3D experience more balanced and less distracting. Wondering if that's the reason that they don't show a 2D HFR version - although that may also be because they figure they make more money this way.

I guess time will tell if audiences are willing to pay a premium for this. Not sure.
