Thanks Steve, I was wondering if it had something to do with the smart tools.

I have them toggled off. I couldn't get used to them after twenty years of doing it the other way.

I'll put them on and try it.

You can also use the smarttool to select and either shift-select or command/control select non-contiguous clips and apply the same effect to all of those selected clips in the timeline.
