Terry,
On XDCam HD, on the camera we have at least, by default it's set up to name the files C0001 starting with the first clip on each disc. But you can set the camera up to create your own numbering scheme. This will create unique numbers for for ever clip on every disc. So, if disc one ends at 00010, disc 2 starts at 00011. Probably doesn't help you much since you're dealing with media shoot by other folks, but, you might want to let them know. And, anything you write in the Bin name Column will still be overwritten when you mount the original disc and do the re-link. So much for putting anything useful in the bins. One of my pet peeves with XDCam and file based workflow.
And with the XDCam, are you consolidating the Proxy Media, or Transcoding the HD media to a lower res? I've been using the proxy media for awhile and haven't seen that issue. But, I've been thinking about starting to do a transcode of the HD, just to get better picture quality. But, if the relinks are off, that could be a problem.

When they are later relinked to the high-res version, the unique clip name is overwritten by the original clip name. So every clip in the timeline is named "C0001". Kind of kills Symphony's relational color correction advantage. :-(
