Have you ever tried the remote editing thing? I have. I had to finish a short piece for a client who had to leave for Europe before we were done. It took two days, several rounds of uploads, and about 8 emails to solve some problems with the end titles that I would have banged out in about 15 minutes with the client in the room. I think the outsourcing thing could probably work well for certain types of corporate instructional media, but god help you if any decisions have to be made, especially if you're talking about a 13 hour time difference to India. I've actually also done the reverse of what you describe, where I was finishing some marketing materials for a client in India, and the time difference was pure hell.
In short, the outsourcing thing may be harder than it sounds, even with a super fast pipeline. There's no pipeline in the world that can put the sun in the same position in the sky for all the people involved.
