You make very valid points. There has been a lot of articulate talk on the list about whether this so called "Paradigm" shift is better, different or worse. At its' root editing is simple, tell the tool what happens where. Be it a linear editor, a moviola with a grease pencil and splicer or an NLE you need an in point and an out point for source and record, or at least three points. The more things like the magnetic timeline try to mask the inevitable track nature of editing a timeline the harder I find it is to play along and troubleshoot. In my experience if looking at a typical timeline NLE with several tracks is too daunting or overwhelming for you to be creative then a career in editing probably isn't a good fit. Having spent some time with my daughter on iMovie I didn't hate it but sure didn't want my Avid system to work that way. Other than format support and background rendering I haven't heard too much that I would benefit from with this new Paradigm. I'm sure there are some interesting things in FCPX but nothing has interested me enough to feel the need to jump ship from a more conventional NLE. The metadata side of FCPX is interesting and I can see that it could offer some new approaches to project organization but when I work with my wife on offline projects I realize the only metadata organization she needs is between her ears. It will be interesting to see what aspects of the new Paradigm I actually find useful down the line.
