[Avid-L2] Re: Avid Event in Burbank

Isn't that better than the alternative?

Not sure what your point is -- unless you are referring to FCP.

Yes, I knew it was a poor value -- and I complained quite vocally about the absurd price-performance ratio. But, at the time, it was the only reasonably-priced game in town -- there were NO other less expensive I/O options.

And at that time, I decided to purchase a couple of BlackMagic analog converters -- and I largely had the functionality of a Nitris DX -- for the cost of a Mojo DX plus around $1,000.

If in the next 9 to 12 months, we DX owners (both Mojo and Nitris) learn our hardware is obsolete in terms of resolutions and bit depths BEYOND those that are currently supported, I guess my past decisions will allow me to feel a little less burnt by "time marching on".

However, it is a simple fact that third party I/O options are much more fairly-priced than Avid's. And this would appear to be very much the last gasp of proprietary device stronghold that Avid has been inflicting on its users -- except for maybe Euphonics products -- but Avid cannot price-gouge on those as they are general market products.

Of course, as most of us painfully remember, the stakes were much higher years ago -- and the financial pain of "time marching on" was much greater. But the DX generation of hardware is maybe the last time that you will be forced to buy an I/O device at vast multiples of its intrinsic value.

It will be interesting to see what Avid engineers come up with to re-create a value proposition for their proprietary hardware. In other words -- a reason to buy Avid hardware over, say, AJA hardware. It sure won't be thin raster -- and it won't be hardware-based DNxHD encode/decode -- because most of us without that support simply don't miss it.

We are at the point where computing power, and applications that offload processing to it, are making proprietary hardware largely obsolete -- and general purpose I/O hardware "good enough".
