If FCP X allows users flexibility to work in a more traditional fashion, that's great news. I reserve final judgement on this product until I can actually touch it.
I'm not opposed to change; I'm opposed to change that is purely designed to sell products. A new feature is not valuable to me purely because it is new, it is valuable only if it contributes to making my work life easier or more creative. And ultimately, while bad software can certainly mess up the creative process, there's only so much powerful software can do to support it. Software, after all, is just a means to an end, and sexy new GUIs will only take us so far - we still have to edit. As NLEs evolve, we may get to the point where we find companies changing things that work perfectly well in order to force us to upgrade, buy new gear, etc. Anyone who sees through this transparently venal strategy risks being labeled an old fuddy duddy.

I should ask if there is any application maker in existence that hasn't felt
"patronizing" (I'd probably use the word irritating instead) in some way or
other to some proportion of users because of change (or the absence of change).
For instance, After Effects CS5.5 is going to support timecode finally (version
10.5) which is something I and others have been asking for since version 4 and
before.
On the other hand, it's clear from the FCP-X interface that insert/overwrite/etc
is still supported. I'm not sure why people think that standard editing tools
won't still be there like extend edits, lifts, extracts, swops, slips, slides,
ripple and rolls from the timeline and such. I mean maybe Randy should have
demoed all that stuff to assuage the paranoid amongst us; but really, if you are
trying to make a big splash wouldn't you focus on what's new in the app? I can
just imagine all the ooohs and aaaahs in the Supermeet crowd, "now watch this
Insert Edit!"
Here is a quoted comment from a fellow named Ronny Courtens (who appears to have
seen more of FCP-X) on Walter Biscardi's blog page:
"As to your concern about FCP X:
You are correct that the new GUI may take some time to adapt to. But althhough
It looks a bit like iMovie that's where the comparison ends. While in iMovie you
are stuck with the specific iMovie way of editing, in FCPX you can edit exactly
the same way you as did in FCP7. You can just open clips in the viewer, place in
and out points, use 3-point editing etc. And if you don't wish to use the
advaced timeline features your timeline will look much like any timeline in FCP,
Avid or PPro.
But if you wish you can also use some handy extra features that were taken from
iMovie (such as skimming in timeline and viewer) as well as lots of advanced
features that are specific to this new app. These of course will take time to
get used to, but many of them really seem worth while learning. The new
application is still being beta tested and it remains to be seen what Apple will
add or drop in the final version.
I don't mind getting used to a new interface and new features IF this adds
functionality and speed to my current workflow. When we switched from Avid to
FCP it took some time to adapt to the different GUI, but editing was the same
and the GUI was quickly forgotten. I still switch from FCP to Avid and PPro on
rare occasions and frankly this does not bother me.
Best wishes,
Ronny"

feeling as if Apple were being patronizing ("We know what you need more than you
do"). Pay attention Avid folks . . . have I mentioned Interface Settings enough
yet? ;)
