Good day:
We have received a recent update from Sony on the situation
with video tape, discs and so forth. Here is what we know -
Metal Evaporated Tape products (DVCAM, Digital Master, etc.)
Production is expected to resume within a few weeks.
This may mean product arrival delays of up to a week after that.
If they decide to fly product in rather than shipping by boat (2-3 weeks)
prices could increase based on transpiration costs. Just so you know up
front - this may, and most likely will, happen.
Disc Products (Professional Disc (XDCAM)
The target for restarting production is currently within the 2nd quarter
of this year (sometime between now and June 30th). The start date will be
highly dependent on restoration of utilities and availability of components
from their suppliers.
Coating Tape Products (HDCAM, HDCAM-SR, Digital Betacam, LTO, etc.)
The expectation of full recovery and complete production will take at least
until the end of 2nd quarter , and maybe longer for some categories. Priority
will be placed on HDCAM-SR (which is exclusively made by Sony). The same
restrictions as the above mentioned categories applies here as well (restoration,
parts availability).
Sony also noted that although it will take time before complete or end-to-end
operations to resume production using the tapes and discs in progress at the time
of the earthquake may be shipped out to market once they are turned into finished
goods.
So, we will continue to get updates as things improve. Remember that these latest
expectations are just that. Things may change for better or worse as time moves
forward.
