[Avid-L2] Converting .mkv and .avi files

Hi Gang,

I guess this could be considered another FCP question, but I think it's actually bigger than that. I was handed a couple of movie files with .mkv and .avi suffixes to use as temp footage. The first one I hadn't heard of, but I guess it plays in Windows Media Player. The second one I at least recognize, but don't typically work with. FCP refuses to link to the .mkv file. It allows me to link to the .avi movie, but displays a big red screen that says I don't have the codec. I figure they need to be converted to .mov.

There are many converters out there for both. Does anyone have any recommendations as to which ones are best?

Thanks in advance!

Back to Avid work for a few days. Yippee!

Shirley
