I think the direct FW connection is "not supported" with the AJA box turned on. You have to actually turn the box off... does that mean you need to restart the software? Certainly possible, but not fun if you happen to have a producer observing the proceedings (sometimes true in my case, and sometimes not). I'm not talking about a connector on the AJA box here... OHCI capture is "not supported" from any Firewire port on the computer. So it's kind of like having an Adrenaline... you can do it, but it's a workaround. As Dom says, you need to revert to Software-only mode, which definitely slows things down.
And, yes, in my universe (broadcast documentaries, for the most part), we certainly do use FW capture, although tapeless is more and more the norm.
