If you do the latter, the Yammie will look for Sync from the Avid which is looking for sync from the Yammie which is looking for sync from the Avid...etc.

The only way I managed to get this right (especially when bouncing Audio Punch Ins through the mixer) was to use a BBGen with a synchronized SP-DIF silence output. Feed that silence into the Yamaha's SP-DIF input, slave the Yamaha to that SP-DIF input, slave the Avid to sync from the BBgen. Then everything is chasing the same clock.
