But I sort of feel this Reformat option support could the the gateway to
properly utilising 'larger-than-frame' images in a pan-and-scan way. The
thing that frustrates me though is the center-cut option. If I put a 4:3
clip on a 16:9 timeline with the 'Center Cut" reformat mode selected then it
will extract the center of the frame an expand to make it anamorphic
(exactly the same as putting a Resize with 134% vertical on it) but I have
no method to reframe that clip - usually in that scenario I actually want
more of the top of the frame for headroom.
What I'd like to see is a plugin on the shot (sort of automatically applied
like the motion adapters for mixed framerates) that I could modify and
select shift the anchor point. And it's that workflow that I could see being
the way in to larger-than-frame stuff - have the reformat mode set to
"original size" and then step into it on the timeline to modify the viewport
on it.
My other big frustrations (in my article I think) are that I can't modify
the reformatting mode once I've put the clip on the timeline, and that if I
modify the source clip it doesn't apply to segments I've already edited from
that clip. To change the format of a clip in the timeline I'd have to
matchframe, modify the source and the replace the edit, then I'd have to
find and matchframe all subsequent uses of that clip.
