[Avid-L2] The growing trend to use DSLRs for HD video shots.

At VET we've had the 'joy' of working with the D5 footage on both Avid & FCP for quite a while now and have workflows in place to manage them. The pre D5 firmware update footage at 30fps presented it's on challenges and the novelty of the different look the camera gives had ready started to give way to concerns about compression artifacts and the effect of the shutter on movement. We also had a few finished 29.97fps. Jobs that suffered badly when converted to 25fps via top end standards conversion.
Thankfully we now have more 25fps source media being shot but we're still seeing compromised footage more often than we'd hope.
Frequently it's under exposure leading to excessive noise when graded. Lots of motion issues due to movement of the subjects or the camera, some are related to being progressive and some the cameras shutter. But we still see actual compression artifacts in the camera source footage.
I'd hoped it would be a limited client base adoption of the DSLR camera as a source but I'm seeing more and more being used on shots.
So Media Composer 5 looks well placed to do it's best at silk purse creation;-/
