Do something like Sony Vegas has. There is a little slider on the bottom left of the timeline that by default is set 1.0 (playback speed). If you drag it while the timeline is playing, it will speed up to that setting until you let go of the slider then go back to normal. If you set it to 1.75 or 2 then hit play, normal playback speed will be that until you reset it.

Seconded! Either mouse shuttle or --better yet -- a way to control the faster speeds when you hit "L" -- this is one thing I prefer about FCP, the next faster speed is still slow enough you can make sense of dialog.
