[Avid-L2] Going Digital?

Someone is telling me that we should switch everything to Digital.
Right now we have a Panasonic Digital switcher for three cameras and record in a Sony Deck. Then we bring it into AVID MC.
Since I don't know too much about digital. I don't know if it would be a good idea to send the signal from the cameras firewire into a software and record on a server.

Any advice on this?
