Personally I think it's because they all know they will be gone in a
year, or two at most. Let's put on a cheap reality show. Doesn't cost
much to produce, only needs to get mediocre ratings to turn a modest
profit, and screw the residuals because I won't be here then. If I take
a chance on a show that needs a year or two to develop an audience?
Screw that, I'll be gone by then.
In today's climate, "Seinfield" would never have survived. Nor would
have "Law and Order." Both would have been canceled before the first
season was over. So it takes storytelling? What's the #1 broadcast
network right now CBS? Who is #4 - NBC? Who has the most reality shows
and who has taken the "least expense" approach to programming, and who
has more one hour dramas? Who USED to be on top when they developed
dramas and sitcoms?
It's corporate think everywhere. Maximize the stock value today, and
the heck with what that does to it 5 years down the road.
It's also the market place at work. People will follow the good
programming.
