to make it more subdued for London? ;-)
I answer:
The SyncTest was lifted from a 30-second countdown consisting of 16x9
color bars generated by an Avid Symphony Nitris with a black circle
that clockwipes into view repeatedly each second. The countdown
numbers are in the center of the circle. At the 4 second point, a
"SyncTest" is performed which contains titles for each of the 10 frames
that precede and follow the sync point located at frame 15. At the
sync point, the circle is complete and filled with white instead of
black (even though it is halfway through the 4-second countdown;
normally at the halfway point of each second, the wipe would be only
half of the way done) and an audio "pop" is heard on both left and
right audio channels. This 1-second lift of the 30-second countdown is
looped 60 times, making it a minute of sync test.
The countdown was made at 1920x1080 with a frame rate of 29.97. It
was created with Avid's DNxHD codec, but I converted it to Apple's
ProRes422 for my use at home in FCP. The original audio is
24-bit/48KHz. Because both DNxHD and ProRes422 are proprietary codecs,
I converted the SyncTest to standard definition DV, as it is a very
common intraframe codec. I also converted the audio to 16-bit/48KHz
which is standard for DV. This SD version of the SyncTest is a 217MB
DV QT file.
There were several versions of the original countdown made for various
uses: an anamorphic 16x9 SD version, a 4x3 standard version, and the
16x9 HD version. In addition, there are titled and untitled versions
of the SD countdowns. The titled versions have "NEW YORK BUREAU" at
the top. The untitled versions have no title at the top and are the
ones I sent to London. All versions are 29.97fps as that's what all of
NBC uses and what London feeds to New York. The countdown version I
used to make the DV SyncTest is the titled HD version as it's the only
one I have at home right now. For this reason, the DV SyncTest has
cut-off color bars since the original color bars were 16x9.
Fortunately, the text and wiped circle are not cut off on the sides
since they were intentionally placed within the 4x3 area.
I am currently uploading the DV SD version of Sync Test to "DropSend"
to make it available. Once the upload is finished, I'll provide a link
to those who have requested it.
