in Photoshop, but I know not everyone has it. What about installing a
copy of GIMP (free) as a Photoshop substitute?
Otherwise, I have often used the trick that you basically already
described of blowing it up on another track slightly and changing the
fill color to black to create a border or drop shadow.
Boris should also work.
Another thing would be - and I THINK this is still possible - that
you can copy and paste a graphic (though you have to do it out of
something that allows you to get at the alpha or channel or layer,
like Photoshop) into the Title Tool. I know you said you couldn't use
Title Tool because it's a special tet treatment/font, but I'm talking
about copying the image file of the text you want and then going to
the Title Tool and PASTING it into the title tool and then adding your
edge in the Title Tool.
Just some ideas. Not all of them may work. I thought the other
suggestions were also good.
