I absolutely adore Opt/Alt Copy, and I think it stomps copy/paste into the dirt. Example: I need to patch a room tone hole. In Avid I just find a suitable hunk of tone on any available track, throw in the source window, and find whatever portion of it suits me best. I don't have to measure out the duration in advance to make sure I won't bust a hole in my dialog, because source/record editing honors my record durations. If I want, I can use my phantom marks or simply align my blue line to computed out on the source side to make sure that I'm not going to include some garbage in my edit.
BTW, Avid has copy/paste also. I never bothered with it.

Forgive me (I don't use FCP), but is that any different than Opt/Alt
with Copy to Clipboard in Avid?
I've mapped (added) the Option/Alt modifier to the Copy to Clipboard
button. With one button push the material in my timeline I've marked
is copied and appears instantly in my Source window, ready for me to
place it anywhere I'd like.
