[Avid-L2] Re: Is there an Avid bug-report email address?

Hey everyone....

Since I manage the community I figure I should weigh in here....

The community.avid.com Video Pro forums have an escalation process. The moderators of the forums - and there are many of them - have specific parameters and guidelines to escalate issues. They determine the issue, steps to reproduce and any other nuggets that can help us pin point the problem and a priority level.

We considered a forum where customers could post but decided against it based on the forum structure today. Also many times a customer reacts to an issue on their system - "its a bug" when in fact it isn't. It would be a LOT of work to pour through a forum like that to determine what is a bug and what is not.

Best bet is to post to the forum that pertains to your product or workflow, see if others report the same and then let the moderator escalate if necessary. There are a bunch of folks on my escalation email disti list from beta to CET to engineering to CS.

Hope that helps and *I* hope as we move forward that we can make some changes to the community site so we can potentially have a bug forum where we rate and score the issues.

Re: [Avid-L2] About that Symphony upgrade...

Not initially. Was more expensive for Symph owners. Only got leveled when they raised the upgrade price for MC.

Re: [Avid-L2] About that Symphony upgrade...

While the most recent MC and Symphony upgrade cost were the same, in the past they were higher, which caused an uproar by Symphony owners, since there wasn't anything new being added to Symphony. Avid did the right thing by making both upgrade costs the same. I don't remember when this changed. Think it was fairly recently though.

My hope is, by doing this deal - the limited time $995 crossgrade, Avid is hoping to get more Symphony systems out in the wild, which would help them justify the development costs for creating unique features for Symphony, like the long over due Improvements to the CC. If they do add new features exclusive to Symphony, I would expect to see a different price point for Symphony and MC upgrades. And if these features are something worth while, I wouldn't really have a problem with that.

But, If they did set different price points for Symphony & MC again, without introducing new features for Symphony, then ya, Dylan is right, that would truly be a dick move. I really don't see them doing that.

I think to some extent that depends on whether you are talking about Avid connected to Avid hardware or software-only. In a software-only configuration, I've generally gotten similar performance on either platform for at least the past 5 years or so. Symphony with Avid hardware has generally been the rub for most and there PC seems to be the preferred config. Right now, Symphony with Decklink or Kona on a Mac Pro (no SAN) runs very well in my experience.

I agree the turning point was after Avid declared they were dropping Macs and moving to PC after a number of terrible Apple design upsets ( remember the on and off need for expansion chassis as the Mac models couldn't cope)
There was a massive backlash and Avid agreed to continue to support both platforms but since then the PC versions have generally run better and more stable.
We have both and the Macs tend to have more bugd and crashes.

Most recent upgrade was priced same as Media Composer.

Upselling people to Symphony then pinging them for higher upgrade cost
would be a dick move and social media/PR disaster. Hopefully not going to

Re: [Avid-L2] Help with mixed rate/matrox mini/ and Avid playback

One more thing:

In P-projects, I think the Mini can output either P or PsF (would be a setting somewhere, possible Video Output Tool). But most TV's don't support PsF over HDMI, so see if you can flip the output to P rather than PsF, and see it it plays back.

What version of MC are you on?
v6 with Matrox Mini should support 1080p29.97.
Not so sure about v5.5 and earlier.

> #2 in a 1080 59.94 project there's substantial moire not so much in the 1080p 29.97

Makes sense. When you place 29p files in a 59i project, a motion adapter (see your other question) will be auto-applied. In the case of 29p to 59i, you should be able to just delete the motion adapter, as the speed is the same, and you then will be adding interlacing (much like PsF). Or you can go into the Motion Adapter and set the effect type to Both.

> #4 when bringing in 29.97 footage into the 59.94 timeline, there's a green dot on the footage. Is this because of the progressive/interlaced situation?

Yes.

Re: [Avid-L2] Red Rocket with Avid MCsoft 5.5 follow up

What framerate are they shooting at?

I'm not sure if it works in SD. Let me see if I can try for you.

As I wrote before, if you set the Debayer to anyting other than Full (in Media Creation R3D settings), the Red Rocket will not kick in.

So, if you want to use Red Rocket, just flip the Debayer setting to full and transcode to Avid media.

The Debayer setting doesn't HAVE to be 1/8th or 1/16th if you go to SD. But, again, if you use RedCine-X with the Rocket, it will work with all Debayer settings.

Using the Rocket supposedly yields slightly different debayering results than a software-only debayering. The Rocket transcodes would look a bit harder/sharper. If this is for offline, you needn't worry about it.

A while ago I tested the transcode speeds on a not-so-state-of-the-art CPU. http://community.avid.com/forums/t/85371.aspx

I'm not sure about local storage versus NAS, but I think the main issue is that Avid 'sort of' support Rocket, but has only tested it on systems with local storage. Pretty sure I've used it with Lanshare Fibre. Needed to mess around with the slots a bit, I think.

MC works with Rocket, but ONLY during transcode (not playback) and ONLY when the Media Creation R3D Setting is set to Full Debayer.
Also, it requires a very specific combination of Red Rocket firmware and driver versions.

If you install RedCine-X on the same system, that can use the Rocket card as well and gives you more options (lower Debayer settings for instance).

[Avid-L2] In camera editing taken to an extreme

__,_._,___

Re: [Avid-L2] Re: No dig...can someone explain why PC is preferred these days for MC?

6.0 has certainly had a few bugs - our 5.0 installs are basically rock
solid, but a 6.0 that I oversee is a little more troublesome (nothing
approaching devastating, but occasionally frustrating)

Like Terry observed, all other things being equal (at least as much as
possible) I have generally found Avid on Windows to be more stable than Mac
(thinking back to about v3 and up I guess) - and also as Terry mentioned
Avid crashes under Windows often seem to be more gracefully handled.

Personally I don't actually enjoy using Macs - I find a massive amount of
OS X to be incredibly annoying, but that's just me and doesn't really
affect how I use Avid. I've tended toward Windows for a while because I
found the value for money (and expandability) to be a little better.
Although I was seriously considering a Mac purchase about a year ago
because it'd give me the flexibility to run FCP ad Avid (in OS X and
Windows). But then Apple killed FCP and I stopped caring.

Currently I absolutely would not put money into any Apple hardware (except
tablets and phones) because I don't trust them to continue to care about my
needs. I'm fairly certain there is not going to be another Mac Pro, the
MacBook Pro looks likely to be hobbled soon, the OS is becoming more
iOSish, etc etc... Even Smoke, which I'd love to have available as an
option isn't enough to convince me to buy Apple.

Sorry - went a bit ranty there... :)

The 2nd gen Hyperdeck Shuttles are so cheap ($345) that you really should just try the format out.

I asked Blackmagic specifically about spinning drives for DNxHD - I was
told "nope". The reason being, apparently, that SSDs can support a
different or expanded instruction beyond the standard SATA one, so if you
know you're working specifically with SSDs you can get better performance
by using those features. The HyperDeck Studio does make use of them, so it
can't write to normal SATA drives.

[Avid-L2] Red Rocket with Avid MCsoft 5.5 follow up

Red Rocket with Avid MCsoft 5.5 follow up
I don't think my original question about MCsoft and red rocket posted but I've found some threads supporting the red rocket for Avid mcsoft but only with local storage. They mention Unity and Isis etc... What about the sanmp I work on. It isn't shared storage but a san with only one station having read/write access at a time. For the purposes of Red Rocket and Media Composer soft 5.5 would the sanmp be considered local storage? It says the Red Rocket only effects transcodes at full debayer so I assume it wouldn't have any effect on transcoding to 10:1 sd media when it is suggested to use 1/8 or 1/16 debayer to speed up the transcode. Anybody know if the Red Rocket would really help transcoding to the offline 10:1 media using the full debayer setting compared to doing the same transcode set to 1/8 debayer.?
