[Avid-L2] Default BCC 8 Unsharpmask raises video level slightly?

 

Mac OS 10.10.5. MC 8.9.4 BCC 8.X(the one from Avid site).  I noticed today that when I apply a BCC 8 UnsharpMask with default parameters the video level of the shot jumps up very slightly.  It's mostly noticeable on the black level going up a few millivolts.  The parameters are default with a radius of 1.  Setting radius to 0 makes the level jump go away.  Higher values bring the level up a bit more. 

I'm pretty sure I"ve seen this before but can't remember if it only happens in 4K projects.  It's not severe enough to not use the effect but I'm wondering what is causing the overall level to rise on the scope and in my monitor.  Clearly the bigger the radius the more noise is added to the edges with large numbers creating ringing on video transition areas of the image.  I get the ringing just not the slight bounce in level.  It's not like full range vs. legal level but wondering if anyone else has noticed this?

[Avid-L2] AMA now Link workflows to online with Lut etc... Metadata?

 

I saw a post regarding online without original ama clip bins available.  This seems like something that should not really be a huge issue in my mind but the more I think about it the more gotchas I foresee.

Traditionally in online all I receive is the final sequence bin so I'm not use to getting original ama/linked clip bins.  So if I am given a final sequence that has used some linked media and some not what is the most efficient way to parse the sequence to separate out linked media from other media.

Now when it comes to relinking ama/link media my experience is if the path has changed it's generally not easy to get the ama clips to relink.  The method most I've seen use is to re link to the original clips and then if they have the original ama/link bins those clips come online too.  In the case of my normal online flows I would never have those original bins so there in lies one of the rubs.

The other glitch I've encountered in my simple 4K workflows is if the ama links get broken when I relink to the original clips in another new bin my original ama link bin comes online but any LUTs I've applied disappear in the orignal bins.  I would assume any frame flex info would be lost too.  Maybe if I didn't open the original ama bins when I'm linking to the original clips that meta data wouldn't disappear and when I open the original ama bin it would override the newly link clip metadata like LUTs to what it had originally been set to.  It always seems like the last bin opened over writes mob conflict in my experience.  I will have to test this when I get a chance.

All these concerns make me start to wonder how solid offline to online with ama linked clips is.  If I assigned LUTs and frame flex to the offline clips those should translate to the online sequence but if re linking to the original clips loses any custom metadata of a Lut etc... category I don't know if the clips in the sequence would remember the offline metadata.  In my experience I change things in the source bin and then refresh the sequence.  So how does Avid maintain LUT metadata if I have to link from scratch the source clips?

These all seems like it shouldn't be a problem so maybe I'm missing the obvious.

[Avid-L2] Using DNxIO output 3 & 4 downconvert and maintaining Aspect ratio on HDMI output?

 

Thanks to the list I found out that if I set my 4K 4096x2160 project up and tell the VideoDesktop software to run in Single or Dual Link mode the SDI outputs 3 & 4 become HD downconverts.  I did find some issues on those outputs that would trigger scope alarms on my Tek 7020 when used to downconvert but no alarms when I set the HW resolution to HD.  That was weird but never really became an issue.

I recently got a Sony PVM OLED in my bay at work.  It's approximately a year and a half old and much nicer than my first generation Sony PVM OLED I have on my home system.  One of the things I noticed feeding it the DNxIO output 3 for a down convert HD signal that when I have the project set to 4096x2160 HW resolution the down convert is 2K 2048x1080 with a aspect ration of 1.89:1 according to the On Screen Display on the Sony OLED.  So the monitor handles true 2K which is cool.  And the Tek 7020 displays it as well.  A pleasant surprise.  The one quirk seems to be the HDMI feed going to my LG consumer OLED is stretching the picture vertically filling the screen as opposed to letterboxing which is how I have the video output setting set.  If I switch the HW resolution to 3840x2160 UHD then the HDMI output gets properly letterboxed and now the Sony Monitor tells me it's getting a 16:9 signal that is properly letterboxed as well.

So here is my quandary.  What if I had a real 4K reference monitor that I want to feed 4096x2160 over SDI single or dual link or even quad link but at the same time feed my client/consumer LG monitor of HDMI.  It seems the HDMI doesn't do a pillerbox even if the Avid video output setting are set to letter/piller box when the HW resolution is set to 4096x2160.

In a perfect world someone would buy me a Tek 4K scope and a real 4K reference monitor but given I don't see that happening in my lifetime here's what would be great.  I keep the LG OLED consumer/client monitor and the Tek 7020 scope.  I get a real reference monitor that supports 4096x2160 display, does that even exist?, and then I feed this reference monitor dual or single link thereby maintaining the spigot 3 & 4 on the DNxIO that I can feed to my HD tek scope and the HDMI to the LG monitor.  If all that would work the only issue would be what I'm seeing now that the LG monitor would still be stretching the picture vertically rather than letterboxing it.  Is there any way around that?  I don't see any down conversion setting in the video desktop software.  Is there something there that would address making the HDMI letterboxed when the Avid project is set to 4096x2160 HW resolution?

And remember every Pixel counts ;-(
