[Avid-L2] Re: Finding Unreference Pan and Zoom Stills?

Hi John,

One option I just tested is to use a hexeditor/hexviewer tool and search for text strings in the bin (.avb) file.
I found the image file names including the path. They are stored in the order how they appear in the sequence from top to bottom.

Be aware though that the strings are stored in Unicode, so you'll have to set the search option accordingly.

I suggest that you put the sequence in a new bin to simplify the search.

Note: I'm on PC and I used MC Version 6.5.4 for the test.

I you wish you can send  me the .avb file and I can post back the text strings I find.

HTH

Johny

Re: [Avid-L2] Latest Adobe loses support for Avid Meridian Codec?

Isn't the Avid Generic PlugIn the new Avid engine?  I've read here that it works but sometimes is problematic and in some cases forcing Avid to use a more specific ama plug in when it defaults to the Avid Generic can alleviate some issues.  I don't recall specifically which ama plugins work better than the Avid default Generic.

NOTE: this does not affect Avid DNXHD codecs.  Only the old Meridien SD codec.

If you are on Mac, Pro Res is fine for SD material.  Its not just for HD or higher.   Adobe really likes GoPro Cineform, which is cross platform and comparable to ProRes and DNX in quality.

Avid is also moving to their own engine, right...or have they done that already?

I don't think Resolve will load them either, at least it won't recognize the test.mov I've tried to import. The sticky thing is I won't know when I'll need a file we've saved in this codec again. Any suggestions for what I can use to convert them. Until I find a solution I'm sticking to AE version 15.0.0."

Is there any nerdy technical reason for?  I know tech moves on etc... and I keep hearing how QT is going away at some point.  Is this change related to changes in Mac OS and or PC OS?

[Avid-L2] Finding Unreference Pan and Zoom Stills?

I know Pan and Zoom is clunky but I'm stuck with an offline that used the effect with video background to fly boxes of stills around a background.  Unfortunately when the background is set to video there is no way to cut a slug of the still used nested in the effect.  I tell people to make a submaster layer to cut the needed stills in a road map but I was just handed this so there is no way to know what stills were used.  We have a general idea of the global pool of stills but it looks like it will be a manual match.

The other whammy is the way Pan and Zoom crops the image based on the still size it's hard to figure out which layer move is what without the actual still.  Loading a generic color bar still will show the basic move but because it's not the same original still size it's hard to tell which move it is in the layers of stills moves.

I tried sub sequencing the individual effect layers to see if I could set bin display to show sources but that doesn't seem to indicate anything about which still Pan and Zoom was originally pointed to.  I also tried and effects summary list but no indication of the still file used.

I seem to recall many years back I would take undocumented pan and zoom effects and put them on my laptop in a subsequence and open Avid in the laptop and then go into the pan and zoom effect and click to import source and the window would open saying please find "the name of the still file".  That doesn't seem to be happening on my work system.  Am I misremembering this behavior or did that behavior go away at some version of pan and zoom.

Anybody got a way to get the Pan and Zoom effect to tell me what the name of the still that was used is?

Background

Avid-L was established in 1994 at Calvin College by Steven Koster.
It was created to be a forum for Avid users to meet, discuss, and share
information.

Avid-L quickly grew into the premiere on-line users group for
professional film and video editors. It was one of the earliest examples

of an Internet community, allowing hundreds of editors worldwide to
share their experiences and expertise with their peers. There was no
better place for a professional Avid editor to get such wealth of
informed professional advice.

At various times, individual subscribers volunteered services to the
group. Searchable archives were maintained by Germany's Berlin Users
Group as well as the UIUC. A tips & tricks list was posted by Andy
Birkhead of Innovative Edit. Wes Plate, a longtime contributor, not only

shared key techniques on his Web site, he also created a photo gallery
for members' portraits.

In 1997, several subscribers began a tradition of meeting in person at
the NAB trade show in Las Vegas. The first gatherings were organized by Jaime Fowler. In 1999,
Avid Technology itself began sponsoring these gatherings as an exclusive reception and seminar for Avid-L members only. In 2002, this changed to the "Avid Users Group" meeting.

By 1999, Avid-L boasted over 1600 subscribers, exhibiting a true
international scope with over 300 international members. The community
included participants from a wide variety of well-known corporate
organizations in broadcasting, technical, and content creation fields,
as well as and multiple local TV stations, colleges, and universities.

In 2000, Avid-L joined AvidProNet.com, and then, in 2002, was integrated
Into Avid.com.

In 2005 Due to problems with signal to noise ratio and abusive posters, the Avid-L2 was formed. A year later the Avid-L was discontinued by Avid.

At the middle of 2006, the L2 has around 1100 members, with plenty of "lurker only" members who simply use the web version of the list. The L2 is spam-free, by moderation and with Yahoo's tools and will remain that way. The integrated archives with both old L and L2 posts came on line recently as well at the University of Illinois. That can be found at http://archives.itg.uiuc.edu/avid/.

Cross-posting to the FCP-L is welcome, tho reply's will not flow back to either list necessarily- check your own email reply preferences. The Final Cut list is found at: http://movies.groups.yahoo.com/group/FinalCutPro-L

Welcome, and Enjoy!
