This was a very interesting and fun Editor's Lounge. A great group of editors for a panel. Lots of good info on how they all got started in editing. Excellent job by cast and crew. I suggest it's a must see when the video gets online for those who couldn't attend.

[Avid-L2] Re: [pr] Avid reports 3rd quarter earnings
And they are selling a product for $2,500 that they sold for 10 times that just a few years ago. Reduce your sales by tenfold, you have to reduce your costs in line with that to still make a profit.

Re: [Avid-L2] Re: [pr] Avid reports 3rd quarter earnings
I'll never understand it. Avid's products are strong right now. Their
customer support is better than ever. They're responding to customer
feedback (more 3rd party compatibility, etc..) and making rapid
improvements across the entire range of products. And the share price is
worse than ever. It doesn't make sense to me.

Re: [Avid-L2] Basic editing approaches
If you go back to early Russian constructivists like Vertov and
Eisenstein, they sometimes applied fairly rigorous numeric patterns to
their metrical montage -- and it certainly worked for them. I've never
tried it myself in such a formal way. I suspect it's probably better
suited to silent film (or silent film accompanied by a fairly
traditional score with a well-defined time-signature), since dialogue
and naturalistic sounds have their own rhythms that aren't necessarily
going to work with an arbitrary rhythmic structure that is more rigid.
(Probably see it used more in music video, even unconsciously, if the
tendency is to cut on the beat.)
Cheers,

Layoffs can be expensed so doing it now makes it easier to sell. And, $6 is sure cheaper than $20 which is when I think they last tried to sell the Co. But what are they selling?
If it is the MC, then a buyer would want the engineers, yet Avid seems to have laid them off. (Which raises the question WHO is building V6?)
Keeping marketing may mean they will take the Liquid path. Once finished, they layoff the engineers and simply sell V6 as long as they can. Since I think the vast majority of sales are to the installed base -- they need only a few marketing folks. (PR is out-sourced.)
I'll bet the company could run on less than a 100 people. In fact, under 50 would do it.
Then Avid joins nearly every other NLE as I don't think anyone will buy the code.

[Avid-L2] Re: [pr] Avid reports 3rd quarter earnings
Ah yes, look at the spike around 2005. When all the Avid folks were running around saying "but we just had the best quarter ever" to any criticisms leveled at the company or products. (Think Adrenaline)

[Avid-L2] Re: [pr] Avid reports 3rd quarter earnings
I don't WANT to sound alarmist, but after reading the press, and reading the release, it is, well, (soft-peddling) upsetting. Even with the FCP fiasco this year, they weren't able to capitalize on
it enough to generate any more than .01 per share earnings. Their
product sales seem small - especially when you consider that poc
FCPX probably shot out of the gate with a million downloads.
It's obviously got to upset them that they have to post these
figures - unsettling the post community is not something they
want to do, and can't be good for business. After all, there
HAS been some good news: the Apple fiasco has sent some users
back across the divide to the Avid camp, regionally and locally.
I was at the Keycode anniversary bash and talked to other folks
and was pleased to learn that some colleges had recently rebuilt
their departments into Avid shops - jettisoning FCP which had
swamped most school departments in the last ten years
and created all those graduates who thought FCP on a laptop was
the cat's meow. It WAS reassuring to hear that some more schools
were getting back or into Avid. Obviously, in southern CA,
many of the big film schools ARE or have stayed with Avid.
USC, Chapman, two of the most prominent.
But it is troubling to know how shallow their pockets are.
Apple annoys because they just end of life products, but the
thought of Avid potentially being so fragile as a
going concern is just depressing.

Re: [Avid-L2] Basic editing approaches
No.
I don't know how and why you would count. Would you count shot lengths, basically measuring cuts? Most rhythmical editing - to me - is about the flow of what is happening _inside_ the frame, more so than about the actual picture change.
I sometimes find I'm sort of counting, but more like when dancing, mostly to a 'beat' within the shot/scene.
