Excellent advice. This works for me. If there are problems re-linking, chances are good that it is a spanned clip.

No need to trash the .new clips and relink the original AMA clips. They both hold the same metadata. It works but there's no need.
My trick is to take the transcoded avid mediafiles offline temporarily while you do the relink to selected open bins.
Do a guide mixdown of video first and work on a video only copy of sequence. No point relinking audio as the transcoded audio is fine.
The VET course I run Avid Media Management www.vet.co.uk/training covers all that and more :-)

To relink a sequence:AMA Red footage. Transcode. Keep the original AMA footage in a bin - put the transcodes in another bin (or organized in several bins).Edit and lock your cut.Open AMA bin and sequence bin. Duplicate sequence. Select all AMA footage. Select Sequence. Choose to relink and in the relink option choose "Relink to selected items in all open bins". Hit OK.It should relink the sequence to the AMA footage.I've done this workflow and it worked with Red footage.MichaelOn Fri, Jul 18, 2014 at 2:05 PM, Benjamin Hershleder Ben@ContactBen.com [Avid-L2] <Avid-L2@yahoogroups.com> wrote:
Hi gang,I'm wondering how it's possible (what the steps are) in order to do the following:1. AMA link to a file (e.g. RED) <--- that I know how to do ;)2. Consolidate/Transcode the clip in MC (yep, I can do that too)-- OR -- Transcode the clip in Red Cine X (I assume the resulting Master Clip is the same as if created in MC).
3. Relink the clip that was Consol-/Transcoded to the original RED file <---- haaalp ;)This workflow is supposed to be possible with a Sequence too, correct? Thanks for any guidance or links to info on this.Happy Friday everyone!Benjamin

The method the AEs in the know tell me is to ama link to the clips and then transcode to a desired offline resolution. This creates ".new" transcoded clips. At this point you can trash the ".new" clips and go to the original ama bin of clips and relink those clips to the newly transcoded media. This approach should not include adding a Tape Name. I'm told for online then you remount the original source clips ama and things should link up. I think there are always a few burps along the way but I'm told this is the most solid overall workflow. YMMV

It might be helpful to add a step, which would be to close all bins other than those holding your sequence and the original AMA clips.
Otherwise you might have a bin open with transcoded media selected in it that potentially would be included in the 'relink to selected items in all open bins' dragnet. This may be one reason why relinking only works sometimes.

We are meant to be asking YOU the questions.
My way - AMA all original clips. Do not move or rename any source folders. Transcode selects. Edit. When done, dupe sequence and select it, open all bins with original AMA clips. Select all. Use the relink option 'Relink to selected items in all open bins. Cross fingers. Somtimes works.

Any third party program that creates Avid MXF media files, as far as I can tell Avid sells them an avid media toolkit (AMT). From what I can tell when a third party program creates Avid MXF media files, these files have embedded tape name metadata support and not "source file" metadata embedded.
If you want to relink you Avid sequence to these MXF media files created by a third party, I created an Avid workflow that goes into great detail on how to relink in the Avid for this type of situation.Unbreakable Conform for Avid Symphony & DaVinci Resolve : AVID
Unbreakable Conform for Avid Symphony & DaVinci Resol...There's nothing easy about roundtripping MXF files between Avid Symphony and DaVinci Resolve, especially if you want to keep handles intact. Longtime online ed... Preview by Yahoo If you are going to use the Avid to create the MXF media files (using consolidate/transcode command) then you can also use this method where I just set-up a custom column where I create the metadata match for relinking.I hope this is helpful- scott freeman
