Re: [Avid-L2] MC 6.0.1.1 Known issues?

For this reason I have installed both MC and Symph on my system, so I can more easily move dongles around. Matching versions of MC and SY can be co-installed.

Only with Nitris DX. Symphony would not launch in software-only version until v6.

[Avid-L2] Re: 2000 cuts fuckup, GoPro NoGo

Shirley haven't you heard F@#$Up is the new term for "file based?" After extensive google search engines determined that "file based" is usually preceded or followed by F@#$Up on the internet it was decided that it could in fact be abbreviated to just F@#$Up thereby saving several unnecessary ascii characters and lowering the overall bandwidth of the entire internet. I'm surprised you didn't already get the F@#$Up memo. ;-)

Fascinating, Bouke! Though I got a little lost too...

Can we really say "fuckup" on the Avid L? Gee, I'd have been cursing a lot more if I'd known it was okay all this time!

Subject: [Avid-L2] 2000 cuts fuckup, GoPro NoGo

Well, i recently asked how to apply effects to a 2000 cuts sequence.
This was (well, still is) a jolly good fun job.
Once i made my 2000 cuts (after a huge amount of cursing on creating sublips
on AMA files to render out to DV for multicam),
i came to the point to show my client a bit of what i was up to.
So, i tried a small part to relink to the sequence to the original GoPro
clips.
Decomposed, found the clips used, and AMA'd them back in (my drives tend to
get different drive letters, as i'm on shared storage)

NoGo.

Cursing, but wait, i've written a HowTo on the subject.
So, educating myself on stuff i should know, i found out i had to relink to
original lenght (before decompose) clips.
(beside a zillion other gotchas)
So, back to the original sequence, relinking with all my wits up to date.

NoGo.

Ok, fair enough, i did subclip AMA files prior to the transcode, so i
thought, let's decompose them and relink those clips, as they should reflect
the original AMA clips.

NoGo.

The decomposed master clips are one frame longer than the AMA files.
Probably that's why it fails.
Well, let's not put our heads down, let's make common timecode and assign a
Reel to the files, and relink good old fashioned way.

NoGo.

Oh, right clicking AMA GoPro files to do something takes FOREVER, and if you
release the mouse too soon thinking nothing will happen anyways, you're in
for a bag of unknown hurt.
This all helps making this a very nice learning experience...

Ok, i'm really getting into the Cartman "im getting seriouslly pissed now"
mode.
I ran a test before i started this. (well, at least i thought i did, but
there is no documentation to proof it.)
In the cursing procedure, I have managed to get one clip relinked,
sometimes, partly, and never into the desired sequence..

So, let's re-ingest all the material at DNxHD, then try to assign a
reelname, and relink again.
This only takes about 700 gig of drive space, and no more than a long night
of rendering.
But wait, for that i need to subclip first, or it will take my weekend and
three times the space...
(I could not turn off the cams for portions not used....)
Now, not that bad, that will take me only about 3 hours for 45 clips. (yeah,
that dog slow is AMA on GoPro...)

Thinking of that, we still have TimeCode to set the accurate points, based
on the prior AMA transcode to DV.
Oh, not sure why, but the TC is sometimes zero based, but sometimes the time
of import. What did i do?
(well, i've used 5.03 on one machine, 5.5 on another, perhaps that's why?)

But, Bouke, YOU are the creator of GoProToQT (where you can assign TOD tc to
GoPro Mp4, that nicely imports into Avid.)
WHY DID YOU NOT USE THIS PRIOR TO YOUR FIRST INGEST????

Shoot me now, i have no idea... (well, i do, but i'm not going to share it
here...)

Of course i had a lot of cursing syncing the material, since the producer
did not bring a flash, my TC transmitters are still not ready, and
PluralEyes sucks donkeyballs on this kind of material.
(actually, it is unable to sync any clip...)

Will i be able to relink my 2000 cuts to the new material?
No idea yet, still rendering the AMA import to DNxHD.

What happens if it fails?
Well, i just make 2000 cuts again. Or perhaps just 1000, as i still don't
know how it should be cut.
Multicam on this is fairly easy, it will take me less than a day to redo.
Meanwhile i'm learning how to read a directors score, and that can only be
helpfull for a next time.

Will i do this again?
You bet, alhough better prepared, and next time i'll bring at least 30
GoPro's, and i'll have the tools to cut them based on the score.
(even hope to automate it based on someone keeping the timing. If a writer
can make music while being deaf, i should be able to direct blind...)

There should be a lesson to be taught in here, but i've lost track.
If you find it, keep it.

Yes, I can see how that happens. Although what I proposed, makes the camera cards the main recording and the external files for editorial secondary. It's more likely that the external recording would get missed. Unless the camera operator completely messes up, it's pretty hard to not roll the camera. But, I have seen it happen, especially when the operator isn't that familiar with the camera operation. I've also seen 5D clips when the operator got start & stop reversed and recorded the resets between the takes, rather than the takes themselves! Less likely to occur with a more "pro" camera and a bigger crew, though.

> I must appear stubborn, but I just don't like the risk.

Not stubborn at all! It's just one of many possible approaches and may or may not be the best, depending on circumstances. All good plans always get messed up during actual production. As an editor, I prefer to have the crew do as little as possible and just concentrate on getting the best image and sound capture first and foremost. This includes all DIT pre-post work. I don't want it and don't need it. I'd rather have the editorial team be responsible for any and all dailies, including RED conversions, etc.

> Arri on their site only advise to use double recorders

Yes, that's essential. But I've also seen crews re-format cards thinking they had been offloaded, when in fact they hadn't. Nothing is foolproof.

File-based is better! Remember? ;-)

[Avid-L2] 2000 cuts fuckup, GoPro NoGo

Bouke

Re: [Avid-L2] MC 6.0.1.1 Known issues?

This is true. Just buy 6 then call and have them activate the 5.5 version. When you're done call them back and they will reactivity 6.

Buy v6 and email Avid - I believe they can give you a license for v5.x, then you can just reactivate the 6 license when you want to move to it.

Great. That's all fine and good. But what if I need it for seven months?
