Background

Avid-L was established in 1994 at Calvin College by Steven Koster.
It was created to be a forum for Avid users to meet, discuss, and share
information.

Avid-L quickly grew into the premiere on-line users group for
professional film and video editors. It was one of the earliest examples

of an Internet community, allowing hundreds of editors worldwide to
share their experiences and expertise with their peers. There was no
better place for a professional Avid editor to get such wealth of
informed professional advice.

At various times, individual subscribers volunteered services to the
group. Searchable archives were maintained by Germany's Berlin Users
Group as well as the UIUC. A tips & tricks list was posted by Andy
Birkhead of Innovative Edit. Wes Plate, a longtime contributor, not only

shared key techniques on his Web site, he also created a photo gallery
for members' portraits.

In 1997, several subscribers began a tradition of meeting in person at
the NAB trade show in Las Vegas. The first gatherings were organized by Jaime Fowler. In 1999,
Avid Technology itself began sponsoring these gatherings as an exclusive reception and seminar for Avid-L members only. In 2002, this changed to the "Avid Users Group" meeting.

By 1999, Avid-L boasted over 1600 subscribers, exhibiting a true
international scope with over 300 international members. The community
included participants from a wide variety of well-known corporate
organizations in broadcasting, technical, and content creation fields,
as well as and multiple local TV stations, colleges, and universities.

In 2000, Avid-L joined AvidProNet.com, and then, in 2002, was integrated
Into Avid.com.

In 2005 Due to problems with signal to noise ratio and abusive posters, the Avid-L2 was formed. A year later the Avid-L was discontinued by Avid.

At the middle of 2006, the L2 has around 1100 members, with plenty of "lurker only" members who simply use the web version of the list. The L2 is spam-free, by moderation and with Yahoo's tools and will remain that way. The integrated archives with both old L and L2 posts came on line recently as well at the University of Illinois. That can be found at http://archives.itg.uiuc.edu/avid/.

Cross-posting to the FCP-L is welcome, tho reply's will not flow back to either list necessarily- check your own email reply preferences. The Final Cut list is found at: http://movies.groups.yahoo.com/group/FinalCutPro-L

Welcome, and Enjoy!

Extras!
With a Yahoo account tied to your subscription to the Avid-L2, you can use the web features of the Group.

Calendar Various Avid events are in the Calender. If you have an event you'd like posted, pull down and fill out the Calendar event request and send it to any Moderator

Database - The database area contains Avid Feature requests, Help Wanted, Freelance Listings and For Sale sections. Feel free to add your listings to any of these areas. Job Postings will remain up for 1 month. Please date all postings to the database areas, being pertinent is a good way to be.

Files- The files section contains various sundry files, including the latest Avid release notes. Check back often for changes.

Photos - Pictures of your Avid setup are welcome, or pictures relating to a post you need a photo to explain. Photos will be posted after moderator approval. Who knows, your picture might grace the front page for a while.

Links- Various helpful links, including direct links to Avid CPR releases can be found here, also the link to the archives.

[Avid-L2] Myriad of Color Spaces in Format Tab vs. Video Output Settings?

I'm running MC 8.6.4 with a DNxIO Mac OS 10.12.5 on MacPro Mid 2012 12 Core 2.66GHz.  I'm playing around with a 4K Project 4096x2160.  The project was done YCbCr 709 originally.  Now I'm trying to understand what the various color space choices do to the image.

With the video output setting color space set to project I don't see much change to the output on the scope or monitor when I change the Project Format color space.  If I just change the video output setting from project to various choices like RGB full range or Aces I see changes in the output signal.  I don't understand why when I set the parameter to follow the project I don't see the same changes when I go back and switch the color spaces in the format.  I think I am not understanding the spirit of these settings.

Also I'm set to single link so I can take output SDI  C and D to get the downconvert to HD from 4K for my HD scope and ref monitor.  I'm assuming that the settings in the video output setting are there to match what the monitoring equipment can handle so I sort of understand why toggling the project format color space doesn't change the video output but then what does it mean to set the video output setting to "Project"?

In looking in Avid help it says the project format color space determines how the media will be processed in Avid and the color space in video output is to be set to match the hardware capabilities.  Here is from the help file:

Your choice of a color space depends on both your input/output hardware and your desired output. For information on how to define the color space for a project, see Setting the Project Color Space.
If your hardware supports both RGB and YCbCr, choose the color space that corresponds to your output needs.
If your hardware supports only YCbCr, you can choose RGB for your project color space to maintain maximum quality throughout your workflow. Your Avid editing application converts your material to YCbCr right before sending it to the hardware for monitoring or output.
The project color space specifies how your Avid editing application processes effects in real time. Your Avid editing application supports native processing of effects in either the RGB or YCbCr color spaces. For example, this means that RGB media does not need to be converted to YCbCr for processing, maintaining maximum video quality until the final output.

So I'm very confused what leaving the video output set to match the project does because when I manually set it the results are obvious but when left set to "Project" I see little if any change in the output when changing color spacessin the project format tab.

All this investigation is an attempt to understand how to work in HDR in Avid.  I took an old 4k project and I expected the video output level to change drastically when I switched to a SMPTE 2084(HDR) project format but I don't see an image change on the monitor or scope.  Clearly I'm not understanding the intentions of the various setting.  I've been told you can definitely send HDR over HDMI to a monitor like my LG HDR capable OLED 4K monitor but I'm not seeing the obvious path how to get there.

Also since I'm using the HD downconvert output from the DNxiO I might be missing the actual output level change that may be occurring on the HDMI output.  My 4K monitor is not at my home system now to test with.

Anybody using an Avid HDR workflow or one of the newer exotic formats like Rec 2020 or DCI-P3?  I'm trying to understand the where, why and when of these new formats and how to work with them in Avid.

This is not new, and not unique to this release. (Stereo tracks, slipping, trimming, adjusting quickly doing half-assed scoring.)

Re: [Avid-L2] Crash-o-matic

It's a feature. Media Composer senses when you're in a hurry or when
you just completed some complicated trim that you'll never remember how
to do again. It crashes instantly when it detects these. --J.B.

8.9.1

Though this phenomenon has come and gone regularly over the years, IIRC

(8.9.3 is insta-crash on my system having to do with the graphics cards. Avid support blames that on my system, naturally.)

Re: [Avid-L2] Re: Audio transfer from 35mm full coat needed

Not sure DPS still have it but Woodholly did.  They used to transfer old tv shows to 24 track and prep shows for international dubbing.

Years ago before NLE I did film trailers, on film and mag.

Also SSI on Santa Monica in Hollywood had them.
