Re: [Avid-L2] OT - Older my book - sleeps - any suggestions

Ya, Caffeine works pretty well. Mac only. Free
http://lightheadsw.com/caffeine/

There's a similar windows app, Caffeinated, from another developer that reportedly does the same thing. And of course there are other coffee-themed windows apps that I haven't used.

But like Shirley, I'm not a fan of WD My Book and other WD small self-contained drives. Seen a few die.

Re: [Avid-L2] cursor not changing

No. Looks like just the standard black cursor arrow but it never changes.  Or when this was happening.  I turned smart tools on and off and on but did not change anything.

Quitting app fixed it.

Re: [Avid-L2] Unable to import files to MC 7.0.3

Second that.  AMA then transcode is the way to go.  Just make sure you have the correct AMA plugin installed.

You don't want to use legacy import for this.  Even if you get it to work, it takes 5 times longer and you may have color space issues.  Transcoding AMA files uses all your processors and is quite speedy compared to importing and avoids random QuickTime induced anomalies.

If you want to transcode to Avid DNXHD using a third party program, I would recommend Adobe Media Encoder CC.  But there's really isn't a need to go there.

As an aside, does ProMax give you any tech support on your turnkey system?

[Avid-L2] Unable to import files to MC 7.0.3

Dear all,

I have a ProMax turnkey HP Z400 workstation (Win 7 Pro Service Pack 1, 2.93
GHz dual core, 8 GB RAM) with FW800 Glyph GT062E drives for the original video
files and computes running Avid MC 7.03. I want to edit a 3-camera shoot.
When I try to import AVCHD files (1080/30P from Panasonic AF-100 and AG-AC90)
I get the error "Exception: NEMFileWriter: Executeinternal TIMEOUT -
NEMFileWriter has detected upstream pipe stall . . .". With repeated trying,
I've been able to import most of the files up to 2.22 GB (14.42 min) but not
the 3.99 GB (26 min.) files (the event was about 1 hr, 10 min and so I have
three files for the AVCHD cameras). I also wish to work with the P2 files
from a Panasonic HVX-200 but see that I need to go back to MC 7.0 or 7.02 to
use AMA (I'd rather import). What should I do? Do I need to convert the
files to a different format and, if so, what format using what software? Any
help will be appreciated. Thanks. David.

[Avid-L2] RE: Frame to Frame Transcode

When you use the word "Transcode" it changes the game. Ignore QT rate only works for imports. If you want to transcode and not bake in the frame rate change, you need to do it in a matching project. In other words, transcode the clips in a 29.97 project.

To maintain the frame to frame ration once those clips are used in a 23.98 project, just "Promote" the motion effect, then you can delete the motion effect. Now you have 1:1 frame rate. Or you can just change the motion effect to 100%, I like deleting myself.

Re: [Avid-L2] Frame to Frame Transcode

Yep, that should do it.  I think it only works with clips that have no audio tracks, btw.

Other option would be to restamp the file's framerate with Cinema Tools, if you have a FCP install on your machine.

Cheers,

That's what I thought but not working in that world I don't pretend to know all the gotchas and typical work flows.  Guess in my online world when I put on my offline hat on occasion I make sure what "art" I think I've created can be duplicated by the next guy, because I'm usually the "next" guy.  ;-)

Re: [Avid-L2] Hunger Games workflow

Well, I think it's important to remember that Bell isn't the VFX department. He's not a one-man shop. He's on a project with a $130 million budget. All he has to do is create an effective mock-up if he wants. The actual VFX supervisor is tracking all this, helping with all this, walking beside all this. All Bell has to do is then say, "Here, it should be like this." After that, VFX pretty much starts from scratch, especially in the case of this particular 'Hunger Games' movie, shot on film. Bell's working with DNxHD material. But the VFX people are going to scan the elements they need from the original negative and build from there. There might be some things that can be ported over for efficiency, but in my experience you usually have to start from the beginning in situations like these. I've done VFX films, and I do temp comps and that sort of thing, too. Not much of my work is of much use to the VFX people except as reference.
