Re: [Avid-L2] XDCAM proxy with hi-res audio in MC5

I don't think you can 'work' with AMA, proxy video and high-rez audio.

XDcam is multiplexed audio/video for both high-res as well as proxies.
(although it shows different with the ProAV folder, but that's just display
and a very slick way of accessing the files)

Afaik, a XDcam drive has only one read/writehead, and it can't be in two
places.
So (and that is in the doc), you must consolidate first.
No idea how fast that is compared to ingesting the HQ stuff though.

(and it's nice to see once ideas picked up by others:

[Avid-L2] Re: ScriptSync & v5

The third party company that licenses the technology used in Scriptsync raises the price to Avid. Okay, why not do what Apple did with Silicon Color? Just buy them and end it. Has to be a better purchase than Pinnacle.

AFAIK, the new feature is that you can use AMA to work with XDCAM proxies
(for picture).

If you choose to link to low-resolution media, you can link to any
combination of proxy or high-resolution audio or video media. For instance,
you can link to the most compressed (proxy) video and the highest quality
audio.

The AMA multiple resolution feature supports specific XDCAM devices which
include a /PROAV folder. For example, the Sony PDWU1 Professional Disc Drive
Unit. See your Sony documentation for information on how to enable the
/PROAV directory for your device.
Avid editing systems do not support XDCAM proxy audio.

Choose File->New Script and point to a .txt file.
The Script Menu is not greyed out anymore, as soon as you have a script
open.

[Avid-L2] USB 3.0 spec to USB 2.0 compatability and optical?

From what I see there are an extra 5 connections to the USB 3 connectors.  These connections are deeper so the usb 2 cables will still plug in but not connect to the 5 new pins.  I'm reading the extra 5 provide for a separate trans and receive to speed up data transfer.  I see mention of optical versions.  Can someone elaborate on the extra pins and the optical side.  I'm googling and seeing pictures but I've yet to play with a computer with the new standard.  I have read the USB 3 is backward compatible.  If so would the new Black magic pocket scope work being plugged into a usb 2 or does it need the extra bandwidth of usb 3?

[Avid-L2] XDCAM proxy with hi-res audio in MC5

Does anyone know how the new feature Avid's listing with MC5, edit XDCAM proxy material with full-quality audio, works? Everything seems to act exactly the same as before when it comes to importing proxies. I can't find anything in the help or read-me about this, either.

I received the code to activate script sync,
but the entire Script menu is greyed out on my system.

Is there another way to enter the code?

I've used the standard 16x9 mask on a 16x9 project and it worked great for a 2.35 mask. Do the math and you will see. Perhaps .76 is closer than the .75 standard but the standard worked for me on a film.

I've had issues until I powered down the entire system including the mojo after an update flash. Don't know if that will help you. Once I thought the Mojo didn't work when I updated it. If you are used to selecting a bin and hitting CTRL + I or CMD + I to get the console info, that doesn't work anymore. Now you have to open the console tool.

Similarly, if you are used to hitting those commands with the program window selected to modify the TC of your timeline, that has changed to a right click selection.

Re: [Avid-L2] Any MC5 Niggles? - NO MOJO DX output!

On a Mac dual quad 2.8, circa 2008, I upgraded to 10.6.3, uninstalled MC
3.5, installed MC 5.0 .I allowed it update Mojo DX, which it said was
successful. MC starts up OK, media online but no MOJO output to
monitors, either pix or sound. Plays ok internally, VU meters wiggle.
Trashed MCstate, site settings- opened new project -(1080p,23.98) - new
user. Same results. Any ideas?

Re: [Avid-L2] Re: ScriptSync & v5

Timecode is irrelevent. The software syncs the written word with the audio waveform. The beauty is that you

don't even need the footage bin open. Just doubleclick on the line of the script and the footage is in the source window with an inpoint.
Additionally, finding words is very easy. Control F and type in the word. It goes right to the first instance. Control G
and it goes to the next. Examples would be, if you need the word "but" type it in go to every instance and listen to it. Try doing that with a transcript(often without TC or wrongTC) and you will be listening to most of the footage.
Or if you need to find instances when you want to know when the the subject talks about a specific thing. Just jump
through the script on your MC with ScriptSync.
It's a fantastic tool but with the price increase, in this economy, I strongly suspect that most will not buy it.

So, for my intelligibility of Scriptsync,
You need a transcript with a fair amount of TC's in it, right?
Now why would it be needed to have actual word recognition?
Just finding the duration of spoken words and match that with the duration
(char count) of the script within boundaries of the TC provided should get
you very close...
(perhaps throw in an exception list for each language, so strange words, eg.
words like eg are recognized as longer than expected)
This would work for most languages, and would require almost no processing
time.

That is, if you find the words in the sound fast enough...
So while i'm at it, why is the waveform in Avid, running on a quad 3 gig
machine, still slower than on my first M100 that ran on a single proc 80
Mhz?
Granted, it's more accurate, but for me just power is good enough so i can
see where someone starts/stops talking...

No, no TC's needed. It can help, but ScriptSync does not need timecodes.

You place your (sub)clips on the related parts (as vertical "lines"), then
hit ScriptSync, and it adds markers at the corresponding text. Clicking the
marker takes you to the text.

For dialogue-based drama, it really helps the workflow. I can image the same
is true for any other scripted stuff with dialogue.

Apparently, a lot of documentary editors use it on transcripts too.

> Now why would it be needed to have actual word recognition?

It's not so much needed, as well as making it very much more doable to
prepare. ScriptSync (the speech recognition module) is incredibly fast.
Much, much faster than realtime analysis.

So rather than manually lining up each take to the script line by line, 80%
of this is done automated, in a fraction of the time.

"I'm very afraid that this is the beginning of the end of ScriptSync. Without
ScriptSync, all we have is Script-based editing, which never really took off

It also completely shuts out the doc market. The original Script based editing was for lined scripts. They were
input by an assistant.

ScriptSync opened up not just the doc workflow but all interview based workflow.

I'll say it again, this is a bad idea.

Yes, you can.

I'm very afraid that this is the beginning of the end of ScriptSync. Without
ScriptSync, all we have is Script-based editing, which never really took off

It was pretty strongly suggested that they want to improve on the ScriptSync
features.

[Avid-L2] Re: ScriptSync & v5

Here's the part that's unclear to me. The licensed part (Nexidia's contribution) is only the phonetic analysis and syncing engine. However, it now appears that the entire script-based toolset is greyed out. So even if you wanted to simply sync by hand - the way it was done before the automatic analysis - you can't. Am I correct in that or am I missing something?

As far as the price, I doubt that Avid could go as low as $299. GET is planning on selling their app at $500 and it uses the same Nexidia engine. So presumably the licensing fee is in the $100-250 range. If so, then I don't think Avid would do this at such a slim margin.

My guess is that there is a lot of new R&D cost associated with MC5, yet they have held the line on price. By stripping out ScriptSync, it's a way to lower the internal cost and not raise the price of the product.

OTOH, it makes it tough. For example, if you buy MC5 + ScriptSync, that's $3490 MSRP. That is more than you'd pay for Final Cut Studio + GET + Adobe Production Premium CS5. Hmm...

There's a reply by Geoff Hollywood on the forums:

http://community.avid.com/forums/p/84904/479501.aspx#479501

Hi everyone,

The Media Composer interface is a work in progress and everyone at Avid
realizes we need to update it. Right now it may feel like we've taken a step
backwards with the changes made to the interface and ability to customize
colors and shapes of buttons etc. However, these changes were made with the
"bigger picture" changes down the road in mind. Avid realizes that some
folks would be disappointed in the intermediate step but there is a method
to the madness that I think will pay off in the end. (Which of course we
can't comment on here.) ;)

One of the cool things I like about 5.0 is the ability to dim the entire
interface and BGs with one slider instead of having to change multiple
instances (bin, timeline etc.)

I would suggest that people keep the feedback coming through the feature
requests forum though. Its a great way to make sure your ideas and voices
are heard.

Absolutely, this is the point I was touching on earlier - nobody wants to go back to the days of each system being completely different, based on the optional extras that one facility could afford and another couldn't.

Re: [Avid-L2] Re: ScriptSync & v5

Yeah, when I'm working on productions that allow me to digitise my own footage (which I'm a big fan of, and can't understand why some of my peers see as being beneath them... It's the best way to get acquainted with your footage, surely), and no transcriptions are being made, then I'll use red green and blue locators to transcribe as I digitise. I mark the start of a statement with a red marker, then I keep tapping away on the blues as I go, loosely paraphrasing what's being said, then at each out opportunity I mark a green (I know it might seem strange to start with red and green for stop, but it's just what I got used to).

It's a great wee system, and I've been doing it for years. Then I use the locators window to search for keywords, and if it's a huge pile of footage then I'll make some PDF's, which I or the director can search.

But you just can't beat ScriptSync.

Re: [Avid-L2] Re: ScriptSync & v5

The big difference is that Avid owned those technology. The key feature
of ScriptSync, word recognition, is that they don't.
I agree that $1000 is not in their best interest.

Actually, looking at that, it's a step backwards. Remember the times when
there were optional features and feature packs? 48K audio was an option
once, Film options were sold separately, Online resolutions, Uncompressed
video, the DV option for Meridien, Paint/Animatte on ABVB...

Re: [Avid-L2] Re: ScriptSync & v5

Avid has been fairly clear that they don't own this technology. It's licensed from Nexidia. They've also said that that license was recently up for renewal, which I think explains what happened. However, this reminds me a lot of Imagineer Systems. Their original product was Monet, which sold for US$16,000/seat. It was (and is) the best tracking solution around and it sold only to people who had no other choice (at that price it was cheaper than reshooting a big effects shot for a feature). The CEO was going around selling it one seat at a time.
Mocha, the essential parts of Monet, now goes for about $1,000, $220 for the plug-in versions. Even Monet goes for $3500. Nexidia's product is good, but not nearly so necessary as Monet, at least not to entertainment people. If Nexidia is serious about selling into this market, and they may not be as this was all developed under government contracts, it will become apparent they're at the wrong price point, and they will then come around. Of course, they could save us all the trouble...

Re: [Avid-L2] ScriptSync & v5

I'm angry too. I've been a big proponent of ScriptSync and I feel Avid has made a huge mistake. This is a breakthrough tool and I use it all the time and many here at CBS have jumped on the bandwagon. It's almost indispensable for my workflow.
Now I understand the need to charge for it but my problem is the price. Who came up with the ridiculous price of $1000. This will kill it at CBS, I'm sure, and probably kill it for most independent editors and small companies. To price it at almost half the price of MC is a disastrous mistake. I could understand something more in the neighborhood of $299 but not this.
With all the great things in 5.0, this is a poorly thought out step backwards.

This really angers me. Just a few weeks ago, we were all having a conversation about how wonderful ScriptSync is, and how it really sets Avid apart from the competition.

Would anyone from Avid care to comment on this move?

I'd love to have 1.5x play speed.
Better for intelligibility (what a word).

Re: [Avid-L2] Re: Any MC5 Niggles?

They consolidated it with the Windows version (where it's CTRL-Shift),
also to achieve standard-MacOSX-CTRL-key behavior (context menu).

Steve Cohen sums it all up very well in this video introduction to the
new MC5 timewline: http://blip.tv/file/3739338

Re: [Avid-L2] Re: ScriptSync & v5

Trouble is, before you can use ScriptSync, you need a (tran)script.
And i never ever have one...
However, i can listen / understand spoken text at 2x playspeed.

Now a major feature request, half the pitch at double playspeed.

I've pointed this out to some of the Avid folks, together with some other
often heard remarks on the ScriptSync situation.

[Avid-L2] Re: ScriptSync & v5

Thanks for trying, and it's exactly why I stick to the dongle: you just unplug it and take it with you and plug it to whichever machine you want to use and it works, even with a laptop on a train. With the licence, you have to remember to deactivate it, then you need an internet connection on the other machine to reactivate it.
It's very annoying that Scriptsync went that way, especially as the dongle can hold options...

Re: [Avid-L2] Re: ScriptSync & v5

You're probably right when you say most people using MC don't use ScriptSync Nigel.

Thing is, I'm not sure that too many editors actually know about it. Many of my peers have been completely surprised when I've told them that the feature exists.

Amongst many documentary editors, the whole 'script' view method of putting a sequence together is totally alien, and I think ScriptSync is probably seen by them to be part of that.

I guess that, for many, once you've learned the Avid toolset, it's easy to become a little slow to pickup on new features.
