Just for the heck of it I am running a new card on my mid 2010 macpro cheese grater running Mojave and Media composer; Radeon RX580 8 GB works well!

Yes. The card is primarily aimed at PCs since Apple no longer sells new computers that are appropriate for this card. The card lacks an EFI which means that you get a black screen until the OS fully loads. This also prevents you from holding down the option key during boot to get a choice of boot disks. If that's an important feature to you, you should stick to Mac cards. A work around would be to hold on to your old card to pop in when you need to do that.

Thanks Pierre. The whole video card thing is a bit confusing. AMD makes much more expensive cards that they promote as specifically for video post/animation.

Hi Richard,
I don't use Premiere on this machine - though I lent it to another editor, and they used 2019 on it and never complained. For Resolve, Metal is one aspect, but the amount of RAM offered by the GPU is the important thing. RX580 has 8 gig of RAM so that's probably plenty enough.
As I said earlier, as this price point, it's probably the best GPU for our aging 2009-2012 Mac Pro computers!

I have the Radeon Pulse rx580 and Premiere recognizes it for Metal GPU acceleration. Resolve does too, but I am not a heavy Resolve user, so I can't speak to its performance. I had an Nvidia 970 and the AMD Pulse performs just as well or better for me in Premiere. At least by my unscientific observations.

With 3 different flavours of editing software on my MacPro, I am concerned about screwing one or more of them up by switching graphics cards. I am at an impasse now with regard to software updates, both OS and application, unless I change cards. If spending around $200 on a new graphics card opens up those limitations, it would be worth the expense.

Can you shed light on any of this?

No New Blue is the bundled 3rd party app. Titler Pro + is supposed to be the replacement for the basic inbuilt title tool.

However the, Titler Pro + just isn't as basic or simple.

We just wanted an updated title tool that supported greater than HD and had some of the long standing bugs fixed.

They are separate. New Blue is a plugin sold by NewBlueFx. Titler+ is the built in Avid replacement for Marquee and Title Tool. On this page is a tutorial from Michael Krulik about the basics of Titler+. Watch it. It is very good. I must disagree here. Getting Zelined was a badge of honor. Patch Bays Suck!!! Who needs them and those stupid sync generators. Everybody knows firewire is the way of the future.

I've been in touch with Zelin regarding storage and QNAP and after he told me where I could put our fibre infrastructure, and I won't post the location here but I'm sitting on it right now, he then gave me the skinny on what I needed to know. When I passed the email on to my Post Super/Producer his comment was, "He seems to know what he's talking about and he doesn't mince words." It made my heart sing.

I wonder if you uninstalled the cursed Avid Link when you uninstalled MC to do the downgrade. It MIGHT be that the older version does not like the newer version of that. Just guessing here.

Two ideas. Both just guesses, but based on when the crash occurs, might be worth looking at.

1) Plugins or AMA plug-ins. Maybe the newer version left newer versions behind.

2) Licensing files left behind causing confusion at startup.

You probably already checked these things.

The Avid-L is great!

Appreciate everyone's input on this. Just the kind of info I needed.

As Ross pointed out, used HD1500's used are quite reasonable now.
And I realize that gives me the option of watching the the thing
on a proper monitor for QC checks. And the PDW-U1's are pretty
cheap too. Guess we'll be picking up both of them.
