Re: [Avid-L2] Re: Could Wacom Tablet issues w ith Avid be related to Sierra Combo Update?

Well it's just not my week.  I decided to replace the nib after another round of frustration and I didn't bother to check the proper procedure.  I used some needle nose leatherman tool and replaced the nib.  It seemed to work better but then me being me had to replace the old nib to see if the problem would come back.  Well F Me skipping again the old nib disappeared into the hole with no way to grab it.  I had pushed it hard to get it to reset like I had this morning but then after tugging the pen basically peeled apart on me and I could not get it to go back together.  Perhaps my level of frustration contributed to this.

At any rate guess who just ordered a new pen.  At least I got a discount code by googling and now I've watched a tutorial and know what the nib extractor was.  I've never ever replaced a nib on any tablet.  Perhaps the textured surface of the Intuos 4 is more likely to wear out a nib than my other tablet models.

The topper is I have a new Intuos Pro 5 and of course it's pen isn't compatible.  I could of course install the new tablet on the home computer but I purchased it for remote work so I would have the best chance of compatibility with unknown OS systems and Avid versions.  Plus I like the customization readouts of the side button functions on the Intuos 4 and have grown use to them.  Oh well lets hope the new pin sorts things out.  I can't believe the nib is ultimately the solution given the behavior I've been seeing but now it's new pen or nothing.  Oh well quality problems although the inconsistency of the behavior is maddening.

This morning more spastic behavior from wacom tablet.  Then without a reinstall of the driver if I press down fairly hard on the pen tip the multi clicking behavior seems to go away.  It's starting to feel like the sensitivity threshold, if that's what it would be called is getting funky.  Trying to click a folder on the desktop and drag it will usually result in the folder opening and not dragging.  Once I press down hard the behavior goes away and acts more normal.

It's as if until is gets a really hard press down the tip sensitivity or pressure sensing is hyper or erratic.  A hard press down and it seems to reset to a normal tip sensitivity, or whatever part of the code this is, and I can click and drag and it stops multi clicking with a light click of the pen tip.

What a pain.

I'm beginning to think there is some sort of master plan/conspiracy to force people into buying newer tablets.  After my wife fought the battle with an intuos 3 we purchased a intuos 5 Pro and the tablet and or the new driver for it seemed to alleviate her issues in Avid.  I'm really beginning to think there is more than Avid at fault with these issues because of the whacky/inconsisitent behavior I'm seeing at desktop, firefox and filemaker.

[Avid-L2] Re: Could Wacom Tablet issues with Avid be related to Sierra Combo Update?

Well F me skipping.  I get back on the computer today and the wacom intuos 4 is spastic again.  I get multiple clicks from on click of the tip in firefox and filemaker.  I uninstall and reinstall and it works correctly.  I restart and it still works correctly.  I then shut down and leave for the after noon come back 6 hours later start up and spastic again.

I then uninstall and reinstall and it's correct.  I restart and it's still good.  I shutdown and restart and it's still good.  WTF I don't understand what changes under the hood that would make it go back to spastic behavior.  I can only assume after I leave and shut down it's a crap shoot as to how the wacom will behave next start up.

I am using the exact driver wacom sent me directly for my mac OS and intuos 4 WTF?  When I did the uninstall of the older driver I followed the wacom instructions for manually removing any lingering .plists etc...  I found none of the files they listed to look for so I assume the uninstaller worked correctly.  So what the hell is going on here.  How does the behavior of what seems to be sensitivity, but it could be something else, just decide to change after the computer has been off for a while.  This is just not playing fair.

I'm not even addressing issues in Avid as I'm only at 8.6.4 MC so it didn't have wacom issues to begin with but I can only imagine that if I'm seeing this behavior in filemaker, firefox and the desktop level it would probably be creating havoc in Avid too.

This is beyond frustrating.  It might take first place over Fonts and New Blur Titler as things I hate.  ;-(

I seem to have been successful with updating the wacom driver to eliminate the double and triple clicking going on with the wacom pen tip.  This was happening at the desktop level and in Firefox and Filemaker.  Wacom support sent me a link for this for my Wacom Intuous 4 PTK-840 Mac OS 10.12.5

WacomTablet_6.3.24-1

The same page I found the download listed this for Intuous 3 and Cintique latest driver:

WacomTablet_6.3.15-3

The links also mentioned there is no drivers for 10.13.0 High Sierra yet so there suggestion is not to upgrade.

I know there have been numerous threads related to Avid wacom issues.  My understanding was the issues began after Avid 8.6.4.  I've read that the issues only seem to be with Avid and this got fixed somewhere in the 8.8.X range.

A while back when I added my expansion chassis I upgraded the OS to 10.12.0 and things worked okay with the tablet in general not just in Avid.  I've stayed at Avid 8.6.4 to avoid in wacom issues.  I have an Intuos 4 PTK-840.  I ran with the OS 10.12.0 for I guess a month or more without problems.  Then I ran the combo updater to get to the Avid required 10.12.5.  Ever sense then I've had strange wacom behavior.  Trying to click and drag a folder in Firefox either opens the email as if I double clicked or randomly opens and email along the drag.  Then when running filemaker on an invoice document I have a layout that has a paste date button.  When I click the paste date using the tip of the pen, like I always do, I get three dates pasted as if I clicked 3 times.  I played around with sensitivity and making it harder helps but things are similar on the desktop level.  Normally I can tap once with the pen tip to highlight a folder on the desktop and then rest the pen tip on the tablet and drag it around but now after clicking to highlight and then drag it often opens the folder like I double clicked.

This seems to mimic some of the kind of Avid quirks my wife had when they upgraded the OS at her work edit station.  Ultimately we got an Intuos 5 pro and that seemed to help.  I've called wacom to get the exact drive they suggest for my tablet and OS to see if that will resolve this.  Given how much I'm fight this since running the combo update it really seems to indicate there is a change going from OS 10.12.0 to 10.12.5 when it comes to wacom tablet intuous 4.  Given I have an older driver from OS 10.8.5 I'm hoping the latest driver will rectify the situation.  I'll post back when I get it installed.

I read in one of the threads that someone suggested the Avid issues seemed to center around the sensitivity.  My current experience even at the desktop level seems to be the same.  I've been on wacoms for almost 20 years and never had to tweak sensitivity from default so it really seems like there is some bug there.

Any suggestions welcomed.

Yes - volume changes sometimes being ignored (for a while).

But also some other timeline weirdness.
Sometimes if I switch from source to record timeline views (via shortcut) all keyboard commands result in error warning sound (no onscreen error message). If I use my mouse for a timeline command, it seems to reset, and all goes back to normal. I think this is a bug.

The problem exists (maybe in a slightly different form) in 8.9.1 Win 10,
too. Cycling the track locks on and off seems to clear it up. --J.B.

Re: [Avid-L2] MC 8.9.2 - Possible Bug

That sounds exactly like an issue I had in 8.4 a couple of years back -- along with certain monitoring and editing issues I had on the video side using "small trim" mode.
I was promised it would all go away in 8.5, and it did...
But as they say, thanks for the memories...   :-)

Has anyone else had this issue…? If you have an audio clip, and you put an EQ on it, and then you go back and change the volume level on the clip, say, by sliding the fader on the mixer — that the EQ suddenly comes off (while the EQ icon STAYS on the clip), and then, most annoying of all, the volume level of the clip automatically reverts to FULL VOLUME? Like, loud.

Happens to me all the time.

With 4.5 stars in iTunes, the Yahoo Mail app is the highest rated email app on the market. What are you waiting for? Now you can access all your inboxes (Gmail, Outlook, AOL and more) in one place. Never delete an email again with 1000GB of free cloud storage.

L'ers - I have to shoot some interviews in Washington, DC (USA) the week of Oct. 23 for a PBS documentary.  I'm looking for an experienced DP with an eye for composition & lighting, with gear & full crew.  Any suggestions would be appreciated!

[Avid-L2] MC 8.9.2 - Possible Bug

Has anyone else had this issue…? If you have an audio clip, and you put an EQ on it, and then you go back and change the volume level on the clip, say, by sliding the fader on the mixer — that the EQ suddenly comes off (while the EQ icon STAYS on the clip), and then, most annoying of all, the volume level of the clip automatically reverts to FULL VOLUME? Like, loud.

Happens to me all the time.
