The 2nd gen Hyperdeck Shuttles are so cheap ($345) that you really should just try the format out.

I asked Blackmagic specifically about spinning drives for DNxHD - I was
told "nope". The reason being, apparently, that SSDs can support a
different or expanded instruction beyond the standard SATA one, so if you
know you're working specifically with SSDs you can get better performance
by using those features. The HyperDeck Studio does make use of them, so it
can't write to normal SATA drives.
