Re: [Avid-L2] Recoding DV tapes #OffTopic

Here's my 2c input:

In my mind any interlaced format is now both completely obsolete and highly vulnerable - and for archiving, keeping it interlaced means you trust that the future will be able to both interpret and treat it correctly. I've seen enough bad cases over the last 20 years to say with some conviction that the future does not deserve that trust. Neither students nor equipment understands issues like interleaving or non-square pixels any longer.

Given that i25 was a horrible compromise to begin with, expanding it to p50 makes perfect sense for future preservation. You're not loosing any information, all the original pixels are still there, you're just giving it a safer cushion to rest on. And I would say the same for scaling everything to square pixels.

Re: [Avid-L2] User Profiles

Hi,

I don't know how Media Composer SubCap Fonts, for example, will work when switching between Mac and PC.
Windows 10 pull it from C:\Users\<WindowsLoginUserName>\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Windows\Fonts.

Re: [Avid-L2] Recoding DV tapes #OffTopic

How do you plan on distributing it to your family members. I have used private password protected uploads to my vimeo account and they can watch or download from there. Another option might be dropbox. Or if you want to give them physical media you could burn dvd's or give them thumb drives.

Why? Storage is cheap!  Archive the files as DV, which means you are losing nothing. You can always follow Job's advice and upres later.

I have been shocked at how decent some early and ugly 8mm Sony video looked when digitized to DV using a Digital-8 player and then de-interlaced and up-rezzed and graded and noise-reduced in Resolve studio.

A painfully long (unedited) example can be found here.
Tech notes there too.

Re: [Avid-L2] Recoding DV tapes #OffTopic

What JBeck said.

Storage cost is irrelevant nowadays, at least when talking DV-PAL (or DV-NTSC for that matter). (Roughly) 25MBit (DV25)+ Audio (uncompressed) vs 1/5 of that in H.264 is not worth the trade-off in quality, imho.
704 is the correct width for DV-PAL, the missing 2*8 to 720 were for left/right digital blanking.
For 768 vs 720 (704) there is a good chart here:

Me, I personally wouldn't deal for now with the specifics as long as I can digitize the original media in a "1:1" manner, that is: with no alterations. Everything else can be done from here, no need to compress or alter an already (from today's perspective) already flawed source material for the sole purpose of posterity. If the posterity will touch it, let them deal with it, in any aspect. But for the estate, you would take a polaroid of your family's pictures, trash them originals and leave the polas, would you?

Hello all. I'm digitising a load of old family PAL mini DV tapes using iMovie 10.0.5 on High Sierra 10.13.6 on my trusty Mac Pro 5,1 via Firewire, the beauty being that iMovie records continuously, but breaks each original clip into a new file and gives it the title e.g. 2007-08-16 15_52_43.mov - and as a person who loves accuracy and detail, this gives me great joy and delight.

However, as DV is quite old school, I fancy making the files a lot smaller using the newer h.264 codec at around 3 - 5mbps, BUT I am conscious that PAL DV is 720 x 576 with non-square pixels, but only 704? horizontal pixels are visible. BTW these files are just for posterity, not for future editing.

So, my question is, should I simply re-encode using h264 and keep all dimensions & pixel aspect ratio the same as per the DV PAL 601 standard? My only worry with this approach is that with future technology, the ability to interpret the rectangular pixel shape might fall by the wayside as time marches on.

The other option is this: should I try to wrangle the footage into pure 4:3 shape e.g. 768 x 576 with square pixels so that it will always display correctly? But then of course, there is the issue of 704 visible pixels, so presumably this will leave a small black pillarbox?

I have Adobe Media Encoder and I am also just trying out Shutter Encoder, although I can't find any reference to 'pixel aspect ratio' in the latter.

Two more things: Should I map to 0-255 levels? And, should I de-interlace? Oh learned ones, what settings would you use?

Thanks so much for any helpful advice!

Re: [Avid-L2] Recoding DV tapes #OffTopic

I'd definitely keep the DV captures. I think I'd then bring them into an HD project and transcode them to ProRes. Perhaps you could bring them into a 50p project for 'deinterlacing'. The blowup to HD (even if just 720p50) ensures you bring everything into the square pixel world, and you can easily export to H264 or H265 from there – and in my experience, blowups to HD yield better results when you upload stuff to YouTube and such. My 2 cts.

You can't run anything prior to 5.5.4 anymore:

I pulled an older MacPro (5,1) off the shelf.  Formated the drive and installed OSX 10.6.8 (Snow Leopard) on it and ran updates.  Then installed Media Composer 4.0.5 on it (if you REALLY need to know why and can get in to that later, but does it really matter?). MC seems to be fine.  But the system won't see the dongle.

The dongle is recognized on my regular Media Composer system.  Avid Link sees the dongle and tells me the system ID and serial number and also tells me that it's perpetual for v4 of Media Composer.

But I put the dongle back onto the system I'm setting up and it doesn't see it.  The dongle is recognized as a device on the USB when I check System Profiler.  But Dongle Manager does not see the dongle at all and says No Dongle Found.  The version of Dongle Manager I installed is 7.0.2

Also, Dongle Manager won't see ANY Avid dongle I attach.

I'm sure it's got something to do with some driver compatibility for the dongle security or some such thing but I'm at a bit of a road block.  I installed the PACE drives that came with the MC 4.0.5 installer.  So in theory they should be fine.

Any ideas of how to get this system to see the dongle?

Re: [Avid-L2] Way way way WAAAYYYY old dongle question/issue

I know that on newer systems, you need to install the Sentinel Driver (included in the Avid Utilities folder). But this is an older system, and should be recognized without having to do that (if I remember correctly). It may be worth looking down this road anyway.

Re: [Avid-L2] MC 2021.12 on a new MacBook Pro Max 2021

[Edited Message Follows]

If the only option now is to link an transcode that makes me wonder if what I've experienced in the past will now happen all the time.  When I've linked and transcoded and the source .movs are still available I've had Avid randomly relink to an ama link when the media has been linked and transcoded.  I've had to move the location of the original source files to avoid this happening.  I'd get things that would just unrender or suddenly I couldn't export a QT Ref because the sequence had reverted to some ama linking without me asking it to do that.  The traditional import was a solid way around that issue, perhaps less elegant but at least consistent.  I'm wondering how that will work moving forward.

Background

Avid-L was established in 1994 at Calvin College by Steven Koster.

It was created to be a forum for Avid users to meet, discuss, and share

information.

Avid-L quickly grew into the premiere on-line users group for

professional film and video editors. It was one of the earliest examples

of an Internet community, allowing hundreds of editors worldwide to

share their experiences and expertise with their peers. There was no

better place for a professional Avid editor to get such wealth of

informed professional advice.

At various times, individual subscribers volunteered services to the

group. Searchable archives were maintained by Germany's Berlin Users

Group as well as the UIUC. A tips & tricks list was posted by Andy

Birkhead of Innovative Edit. Wes Plate, a longtime contributor, not only

shared key techniques on his Web site, he also created a photo gallery

for members' portraits.

In 1997, several subscribers began a tradition of meeting in person at

the NAB trade show in Las Vegas. The first gatherings were organized by Jaime Fowler. In 1999,

Avid Technology itself began sponsoring these gatherings as an exclusive reception and seminar for Avid-L members only.  In 2002, this changed to the "Avid Users Group" meeting.

By 1999, Avid-L boasted over 1600 subscribers, exhibiting a true

international scope with over 300  international members. The community

included participants from a wide variety of well-known corporate

organizations in broadcasting, technical, and content creation fields,

as well as and  multiple local TV stations, colleges, and universities.

In 2000, Avid-L joined AvidProNet.com, and then, in 2002, was integrated

Into Avid.com.

In 2005 Due to problems with signal to noise ratio and abusive posters, the Avid-L2 was formed. A year later the Avid-L was discontinued by Avid.

At the middle of 2006, the L2 has around 1100 members, with plenty of "lurker only" members who simply use the web version of the list.  The L2 is spam-free, by moderation and with Groups.io’s tools and will remain that way.

In 2019,  the Group has migrated to Groups,io from the previous Yahoo engine-   the Groups.io page  maintains the complete Avid-L2 archive.    The original Avid-L archive has been lost to the history of the interwebz.

Welcome, and Enjoy!
