Re: [Avid-L2] Recoding DV tapes #OffTopic

Here's my 2c input:

In my mind any interlaced format is now both completely obsolete and highly vulnerable - and for archiving, keeping it interlaced means you trust that the future will be able to both interpret and treat it correctly. I've seen enough bad cases over the last 20 years to say with some conviction that the future does not deserve that trust. Neither students nor equipment understands issues like interleaving or non-square pixels any longer.

Given that i25 was a horrible compromise to begin with, expanding it to p50 makes perfect sense for future preservation. You're not loosing any information, all the original pixels are still there, you're just giving it a safer cushion to rest on. And I would say the same for scaling everything to square pixels.

@Job ter Burg:

Interesting point: why would you prefer storage of  i25 transferred to p50 over keeping it interlaced (aside horizontal resolution)?

I'd say: same difference. Link the DV clips into a 720p50 project in MC, set Frameflex to 'Pillarbox', export as h264/h265 from MC.

Thanks all for your helpful comments. Perhaps the word 'archive' was misleading. I will be keeping both the DV tapes and the original DV files captured via firewire, but I need to make smaller COPIES to distribute to family members... so bearing that in mind, do you have suggestions for a list of settings as per original post? Thanks very much indeed!
