Testing Avid AAF into Resolve comparing an Avid Sequence linked to Camera Raw vs. Avid Sequence linked to transcoded with handles DNxHRHQX media. In Resolve I first brought in the Camera Raw media from a Panasonic Varicam 35 4K shoot. Then I brought in an Avid aaf from a sequence linked to the camera raw AVC-I media and I checked the link to camera original. That all worked as well as expected with all the main camera media working fine. I then did the same with an Avid aaf made from a sequence linked to Avid transcodes to DNxHRHQX with handles. I kept the Avid media hidden from the surface of the drive and although Resolve may not care if media is from the root of a drive I didn't check any of the options to bring in media clips with the aaf. This sequence also came in properly for the main camera media. I don't quite know how Resolve links when there are no tape name/reel numbers but it did work.
The oddity I found was that when I tried to sort the timeline in C Mode, which only works in the color tab for some reason, it didn't sort by source. I found the general setting related to sorting C mode by Reel Name and then timecode but that still didn't sort in source order. It was basically sorting in time code order. Then it dawned on me that the check box in the general settings tab said reel name not file name. I then checked assist using reel numbers setting it to use file name. Then I was able to get a more understandable C Mode sort. Is there any other way to get Resolve to C Mode by source than using assist with Reel Name?
I'm hoping to find a convenient to be able to group similar clips to a common color correction group. I'm told I can manually group clips to be linked in color correction so I'm hoping to sort of emulate how I rename with suffixes Clip names in Avid so the relational color correction applies correctly when coloring by source clip name in Avid.
If using assist by reel name is the only way to achieve a usable C Mode in Resolve will this create a down side in round tripping back to Avid or anywhere else in the food chain. In my limited Resolve work with Assist using Reel Names is checked the clips rendered out to go back to Avid media end up with a tape name that comes from Resolves's Reel Name. This has always been rock solid but the adding of a tape name usually breaks any future ama linking back to originals and I would think it would also break any chance of the original Avid sequence, that was aaf'd to Resolve, linking to the new Resolve Rendered out media. Anybody got any insight to this? I suppose I could turn off assist using Reel Name before rendering out?
